From His Ex-Wife to the World's Most Sought-After Restorer (Jade and Hudson) novel Chapter 38

Chapter 38 The Unwavering Bias

Thud-

The anticipated pain never came.

A familiar scent of cedarwood filled her senses.

Relief washed over Jade as she looked up in shock.

Meeting Hudson’s calm eyes, she froze instantly.

Wasn’t he on a business trip? Why was he suddenly here?

Amidst her confusion, Amara’s soft voice drifted to her ears.

“Hudson.”

Amara walked up to Hudson’s side and looked up at him.

“Didn’t I tell you I was fine? Why did you still come all this way?”

Jade’s heart lurched. She pushed Hudson away and took a step back.

She had almost forgotten-the person who got hurt was Amara.

The woman Hudson cherished above all else was in trouble; of course it was perfectly normal for him to show up.

Hudson stared at the nasty swelling that covered half of Amara’s face, his brow furrowing deeply.

“Your face was beaten like this. How could I rest easy without coming to check on you?”

Guilt crept over Amara’s features.

“You’re already swamped with work, and yet you dropped everything to fly back from overseas just for me. I really feel terrible about this.”

Standing off to the side, Jade listened in a daze.

Yeah.

Hudson had always treated his work like his lifeblood.

Two years ago, she had suffered from appendicitis, writhing on the floor in absolute agony.

They had just moved into their new marital home, and there were no servants around.

The pain was so unbearable that, terrified she might die alone in the villa without anyone knowing, she crossed a line and called Hudson while he was working.

But even then, Hudson didn’t come personally. He just ordered Kevin to take her to the hospital.

Chapter 38 The Unwavering Bias

Words couldn’t describe the hollow feeling of waking up in a hospital bed with absolutely no one by her side.

Two years had passed, and she thought she had forgotten how excruciatingly painful that moment had been.

But now she realized that the memory from two years ago was still fresh. That terrible feeling, especially now that she had a stark comparison, was etched even deeper into her mind.

That suffocating, icy ache felt like it was fused to her bones, searing the tip of her heart, impossible to shake off.

A shadow dimmed Jade’s eyes. She dug her nails deep into her palms, using the physical sting to suppress the bitter sorrow surging in her chest.

Spotting Hudson, Cindy immediately raised her shrill voice.

“Hudson, thank goodness you’re here! Hurry up and tell them to release your brother and his girlfriend!”

The piercing shriek made Hudson’s brow furrow even tighter, his expression instantly darkening.

“He’s an adult. If he acts recklessly without thinking of the consequences, he needs to take responsibility for his own mistakes.”

Hudson’s icy voice and dark expression were genuinely terrifying. Cindy’s bravado instantly shrank, and she hunched her neck. Turning her gaze to Jade, she found her nerve again, yanking her forward and snapping viciously.

“Robert is your little brother! Hurry up and plead with Mr. Walter to let him go.”

Cindy’s rough grip hurt Jade. Noticing this, Hudson pulled Jade toward him, shielding her behind his back.

“Robert was the one who threw the punches. Why are you grabbing Jade?”

Hudson stepping up to defend Jade stunned everyone present, including Jade herself.

She never in a million years expected Hudson to actually speak up for her….

She lowered her eyes. Her chest felt full, prickly, and numb, but the sharp pain was still overwhelmingly intense.

Amara’s face had grown so dark it was practically dripping ink. She wanted nothing more than to rip Jade out from behind Hudson and take her place.

Cindy, however, was excellent at reading the room. Seeing this, she immediately changed her tune,

“Mr. Walter, our Robert only stood up for Jade because he treats her like his own flesh and blood. Please, for your brother-in-law’s sake, just let him off the hook this once!”

Hudson’s unreadable, obscure gaze swept over Jade.
