He paused, giving her a deep, respectful bow.
“Ms. Merchant, I’m begging for your help.”

The gesture was heavy with sincerity; Jade hurried to help him up.

“Please, don’t do that. I understand your passion for these artifacts, but I can’t promise a miracle. All I can say is that I will give them everything I have.”
Joseph looked at her with tear-filled eyes. “That is all I could ever ask. Thank you. Thank you, Ms. Merchant.”
After the tour, they finalized the details for the mentor selection filming, which would start in two days. Then Jade and Sarah left.
As they stepped out of the museum, Sarah let out a long sigh of admiration.
“Jade, you’re incredible. Your reputation is international now! If you actually fix those books, I can’t even imagine how high your status will climb.”
She might even surpass Edward Mitchell, but Sarah kept that thought to herself out of respect for her Master.
Jade knew the scale of the task. Restoring that collection wouldn’t be easy. She needed to focus on the work, not the accolades.
“One step at a time, Sarah. Let’s get the job done first.”
Foundation first. Talk later.
“Jade!” A familiar voice cut through the air.
Jade’s brow furrowed instinctively. Hudson was usually a man with a packed schedule,
She’d assumed he’d have fled back to Kingston after last night’s disaster, but here he was.
Was the Walter Group failing? Was he really that bored?
Or had the lung cancer finally reached his brain?
Jade offered a silent internal prayer for patience and kept walking, pulling Sarah toward the
street.

Hudson looked haggard, his eyes rimmed with exhaustion as he held out a bouquet of hydrangeas.
“Jade, I was calling for you.”
Jade didn’t stop. “And I don’t have to answer.”
Hudson ignored the rejection, thrusting the flowers toward her, his voice full of a desperate, hidden anxiety.
“I picked these out for you myself. I spent an hour finding the right ones.”
Jade gave the bouquet a single, dismissive glance and walked around him, pulling Sarah with
her.
Hudson’s temper finally flared. He reached out and grabbed her other wrist, his face a mask of frustration.
“Jade! Are you really going to push me to the limit?”
Jade gasped at the sudden pain in her arm. She wrenched her hand away, looking at him with pure disbelief.
“Are you insane? You show up uninvited and harass me, and I’m the one pushing you?”
Hudson froze. He forced his breathing to steady and shot a cold look at Sarah.

“Tell her to leave. I have something to say to you in private.”
Sarah jumped, instinctively stepping in front of Jade to shield her.
“As long as I’m here, you’re not laying another hand on her!”
Hudson didn’t even look at her. His eyes were locked on Jade.
“I have something to tell you about Bastian Hamlet. Are you sure you want her to hear it?”
Hudson had known Jade for years; he knew exactly where her nerves were.
He knew how to target the things-and people-she cared about most,
Jade closed her eyes for a second, then turned to Sarah.

“Wait for me over there, okay?”
Sarah nodded, giving Hudson one final, distrustful look before stepping back.
“I’m right here, Jade. Just yell if he does anything.”
“I will.”
Jade turned back to Hudson. “Well?”

Hudson let out a cold, sharp laugh. “I call your name and you ignore me. I mention Bastian Hamlet and suddenly you’re all ears. Is he really that important to you?”
Jade realized he was stalling and decided to hit him where it hurt.
“He’s a lot more important than you are.”
