But she had no room for romance; her only focus was her career and her own independence.
She had rejected him before, and although they were friends now, she needed to keep the boundaries clear.
Once the wound was dressed, Jade walked Bastian to the door.
She went into the bathroom to shower and saw his ruined suit jacket on the rack; she called the front desk to have it dry-cleaned.
She’d return it when she saw him tomorrow.
At the hotel entrance.
The stretch Bentley pulled away from the curb.
In a dark alleyway nearby, a spark of crimson flickered in the shadows.
As the glow intensified, Hudson’s cold, hollow face emerged into the pool of light from a streetlamp.
He’d stayed in the lobby for hours after leaving her floor.
If Bastian hadn’t left, he might have actually broken the door down.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
The phone in his pocket wouldn’t stop vibrating.
He answered it, and Charles Green’s booming voice hit his ear.
“Did you find her? How did it go? Are you coming back?”
Charles was in Faronne handling firm logistics; he hadn’t known Hudson was coming until a call that morning.
Hudson looked at the hotel entrance, then flagged down a taxi.
“Meet me at the Bar. Now.”
Inside the private lounge.

By the time Charles arrived, Hudson had already downed three bottles of high-proof whiskey on an empty stomach.
He was sprawled on the leather sofa, his stomach cramped with pain, the alcohol burning a path from his gut to his throat.
The pain brought a strange clarity; the alcohol brought a welcome numbness.
They collided in his head, a storm he was beginning to enjoy.
It was the only way to drown out the image of Jade’s indifferent face.
Hudson reached for another bottle, fumbling with the opener.
The glass began to overflow; as he went to drink, the bottle was snatched from his hand.
Thud. Charles slammed it back onto the table.
“Are you out of your mind? You literally just got a stomach diagnosis this morning! You want to die?”
Charles sat across from him, lighting a cigarette.
He didn’t need to ask; one look at Hudson’s state told him the meeting with Jade had been a disaster.
Hudson acted as if Charles were invisible, reaching for the bottle again and downing half of it. The burn in his gut intensified, his eyes rimmed with red.
Phew.
He shoved the bottle away and slumped against the sofa, ripping his tie off and tossing it aside,
Under the strobe lights, he saw Jade’s face again.
He covered his eyes with his hand, his voice breaking into a ragged, hollow whisper.
“She’s done with me, Charles… she heard I was dying and she didn’t even blink…”
The music in the bar was deafening.
Even in the VIP lounge, the bass thrummed through the walls.
Combined with Hudson’s raspy voice, Charles couldn’t make out the words.
