Bastian looked at Jade’s swaying form and her pale face; the flush from the broth was gone, replaced by a ghastly white.
Pity turned to rage as he delivered a sharp kick to Hudson’s shin.
Thud.
Hudson was forced to let go, stumbling back several paces.
Bastian’s gaze was lethal. “Hudson Walter, you ignored her when your family bullied her, and now you’re too blind to see how sick she is? She’s burning up with a fever, and you’re manhandling her? You’re not dying of cancer; you’re dying of narcissism! Go find a psychiatrist before your brain rots along with your body!”
Hudson clenched his fists to strike back, but he stopped when he looked at Jade.
Her skin and her lips were a sickly, translucent white.
The fire in him died, replaced by a hollow desperation.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were that sick.”
Bastian nudged Jade into the room and followed her in.
Slam-
The heavy door shut, cutting Hudson off from her completely.
He raised a hand to pound on the wood, then stopped himself, turning away with a darkened expression.
Inside the room.
Jade immediately went to the cabinet and pulled out her first-aid kit.
She opened it and grabbed a tube of ointment.
“I brought this from home; it’s good for bruising. Let me see your hand.”
Bastian took the tube from her before she could touch him.

He watched her sit back on the bed while he applied the cream to his knuckles. Jade watched his hand and his split lip, her fingers fidgeting on her knees.
“I’m
sorry. This is all my fault.”
Bastian didn’t look up.
“Instead of worrying about me, shouldn’t you be worried about yourself? He followed the way to Faronne. Given how unhinged he looks, who knows what he’ll do next?”
Jade rubbed her aching temples. “I-”
you all
“Bring your assistant and come stay at my estate,” Bastian said, putting the ointment away.
“Hotel security isn’t enough to keep a man like that out.”
Jade knew he was only looking out for her, and his logic was sound.
She thought of the memories from her dream-the fragments of a shared childhood.
Silhouettes in a castle, a lawn, a dark alleyway…
Those blue-gray eyes had felt so real, so vivid.
Bastian’s appearance in her life had been too sudden, his kindness too perfect to be random.
For a man of his status to do all this just because of a debt to her biological father felt like a lie.
There had to be a deeper source for his devotion.
She didn’t believe in coincidences.
Everything was a puzzle she hadn’t solved yet.
She didn’t want to live in the dark anymore.
Since Bastian lived in Faronne, going to his home and meeting his people might give her the answers she needed.
And since he invited Sarah too, there was no reason to feel unsafe.
The refusal died on her lips.

She had to meet with the directors at the Klein Museum tomorrow to finalize the schedule.
She would decide then.
“Take your time. If you stay here, I’ll just double the guard.” Bastian wanted to protect her, but he wouldn’t force her into anything.
Jade nodded, and Bastian gestured to his face.
She blinked. “What?”
He pointed to his split lip.
“I can’t reach this properly. Can you help me?”
Jade gave a small nod. “Sure.”
