But he refused to believe that her leaving him was a good thing.

They had been bound for three years; they were meant to be tied together for the rest of their lives.
He had used the wrong tactics before, but once he brought her back, he would cherish her a thousand times more than he ever had.
Jade waited for him to speak, and when he remained silent, her last shred of patience evaporated.
“I have five minutes until boarding. If you have nothing to say, I’m leaving.”
Hudson cleared his throat. “Where are you going for this business trip?”
When he first heard from Charles that she was moving abroad, he had lost all reason.
Now that he was looking at her, his logic began to return.
Jade was a creature of habit; her studio was here, and her mother and child were buried in Southhill. She would never just abandon those links.
The only logical explanation was that Charles had misinterpreted the news; she was just going on a trip.
Jade knit her brows, her voice sounding like ice.
“I have no obligation to share my itinerary with you.”
Hudson didn’t push. Instead, he shifted to a different target.
“Did you know all along that Cortney was Lyndon Spenser’s daughter?”
Jade gave a flat “Yes,” showing zero interest in how he’d found out.
In her world, that chapter was closed and buried.
Whatever Hudson suffered now was no longer her concern.
Hudson let out a short, self-deprecating laugh. “No wonder you looked at me like that whenever I mentioned her. You must think I’m a complete fool.”

Jade gave him a long, unreadable look.
“It’s good that you’ve finally realized it.”

Hudson stared at her, silent and unmoving. Just as she was wondering what other madness he had planned, he lunged forward, crushing her in a hug.
He used every ounce of his strength, his grip so tight her ribs began to ache.
Before she could struggle, he let go and looked deep into her eyes.
“Jade, I was wrong about everything. Just wait for me. Once I handle things here, I’m coming for you. I’m going to show you a version of me you’ve never seen.”
With that, he turned on his heel and walked away.
Jade watched his retreating back, her expression remaining entirely flat.
As far as she was concerned, the story of Jade and Hudson had ended the moment Amara was exposed.
She didn’t even want to analyze what he meant by “coming for her.”
In the past, his “love” had been a weapon used to manipulate and hurt her.
But now, that weapon had no edge.
He could say whatever he wanted; it meant nothing.
Hours later, Faronne.
Jade and Sarah arrived at the boutique hotel they had booked.
Their rooms were adjacent, making it easy to coordinate their work and schedules.
After unpacking, Sarah came to find her.
“Jade, I heard there’s a stunning lake nearby called ‘The Emerald Eye.’ I checked the maps; it’s right around the corner. Want to grab some dinner and see it?”
“Sure.”
Faronne was warm this time of year. Jade changed into a light dress and headed out with
Sarah.

Walking down the boulevards, they were surrounded by classic French architecture and rows of towering plane trees.
The local shops were charming, everything looking as if it were viewed through a vintage film filter.
Faronne truly earned its reputation as a city of romance; every frame felt like a scene from a
movie.
Jade snapped several photos before they reached the shore of the “Emerald Eye.”
The lake was like a sea of liquid jade, its color pure, translucent, and unnervingly deep.
It was easy to see why it was named for a gemstone.
“It’s so beautiful!”
Hearing Sarah’s gasp, Jade watched her run toward the edge of the crowd. She followed with a smile, calling out a warning.
“Careful! Don’t trip!”
Sarah found a picturesque tree and leaned against it, striking a pose for Jade.
“Jade, take a couple of shots for me!”
