In the passenger seat, Charles gripped his seatbelt tight, wanting to talk some sense into Hudson.

But seeing those bloodshot eyes and the look of pure, manic desperation, he swallowed his words.

Forget it.

There was no talking to him now. Charles had already started picking out his own burial plot the moment he got into this car; why waste his breath?

“Ms. Merchant, we have about twenty minutes until boarding starts.”

Sarah looked up from her screen to give the reminder.

“Thanks,” Jade said.

She gave a small nod and reached into her bag to double-check her documents.

Suddenly, a wave of commotion broke out across the terminal.

Normally indifferent to crowds, Jade didn’t even bother to look up.

Then, she felt a sharp nudge at her elbow and heard Jewell’s voice drop into an uneasy whisper.

“Jade… look up. Right now.”

Jade knit her brows in confusion and looked toward the entrance, meeting Hudson’s bloodshot

stare.

It was the dead of winter, yet Hudson was wearing nothing but a thin, flimsy hospital gown.

His face and lips were a sickly, frozen blue, and his hair was matted across his forehead in a mess of sweat and wind.

The airport was packed, and every eye was on him, but he seemed entirely oblivious, his gaze locked onto Jade as if she were the only thing left in his world.

Jade froze, slowly rising from the bench.

Hudson reached her and stopped, his eyes suddenly stinging as if something were about to overflow, a heavy lump forming in his raw, raspy throat. He reached out with trembling fingers, wanting to touch her cheek, but he hesitated at the last second and let his hand fall.

“Can we talk?”

When he finally spoke, his voice was a broken, jagged tremble.

“Jade, please… can we just talk alone for a minute?”

Jade had never seen him like this.

His usual mask of unshakable composure was fractured, looking as if it might shatter into a thousand pieces at any second.

Seeing her silence, Hudson felt his heart suspended in a hollow void; his anxiety spiked, and he took a desperate step forward, nearly crowding into her space.

When he spoke again, his voice was a low, desperate murmur, thick with a barely perceptible plea.

“Jade, please. Just one conversation. Please?”

His fingertips twitched at his side, moving as if to catch her hand, but Jewell lunged forward

and shoved him back.

Jewell stood between them, shielding Jade as she glared at him with a burning fury, pointing toward the terminal exit.

“Get it through your head, Mr. Walter-you are divorced! She doesn’t owe you a single word. Her life is perfect without you, so go back to whatever hole you crawled out of and stop polluting her air!”

Hudson didn’t answer; he didn’t even glance at Jewell. His eyes remained fixed on Jade, an unwavering focus that suggested he wasn’t moving until he got what he came for.

“Jade…”

Jade stepped out from behind Jewell and met his gaze. “What is there left to talk about?”

“Jade, don’t do it!” Jewell hissed, grabbing Jade’s wrist and looking at Hudson with pure hostility.

She was certain this dog was just using his pathetic appearance to guilt-trip Jade into a

conversation.

She was terrified Jade was about to walk right into another trap.

Jade met Jewell’s worried eyes and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
