Chapter 297 The Flavor of Memory

Chapter 297 The Flavor of Memory

She suspected he was making fun of her, but she couldn’t prove it.

She went to the living area and pulled the item from the box.

45 Free Coins

It was a sleek, rose gold and white electronic wristband. She searched the box for a manual but found nothing. She walked back into the kitchen.

“What is this?”

Bastian didn’t look up from the vegetables.

“It’s a specialized wrist support. It has a built-in micro-massager and a reservoir for essential oils. You spend all day using your wrists for fine detail work; strain is inevitable. Wear it while you work for protection, and when your hand feels tired, the massage function will help soothe the muscles.”

Jade gripped the device, a sudden wave of emotion swelling in her chest.

Restdration work was brutal on the joints. Repetitive strain was the industry’s silent killer.

She’d seen Edward’s hands ache whenever the weather turned damp.

She knew the risks, but she’d always figured she was too young to worry about it.

She never expected Bastian to be the first person to actually notice.

Jade’s voice felt thick. “This must have cost-”

“I had the Group’s R&D department custom-build it for you. It’s the only one of its kind in the world.” Bastian cut her off, predicting her attempt to pay him back.

The subtext was clear, “you can’t buy this in a store, so don’t even try to put a price on it.”

He knew she hated being in his debt.

But he hated the idea of her keeping a ledger of his kindness even more.

Jade went silent. She slipped the gift on.

‘Thank you.”

Bastian caught her eye, a faint smile touching his lips.

“It’s going to get smoky in here. Go try it out in the other room. I’ll call you when dinner is served.”

Jade looked at the perfectly chopped ingredients on his station. There was clearly nothing left for her to do. She nodded and stepped out.

An hour later, Bastian set the table and called her from the workshop.

“Dinner’s ready.”

Jade stretched her neck and walked out, showing him the wristband. Her eyes were bright.

“I’ve been wearing it while I work. It’s incredible. My hand feels so much lighter.”

“Glad to hear it.” Bastian looked away, heading for the dining area. He didn’t want her to see how much that look in her eyes affected him.

The spread on the table was impressive: four courses and a carafe of wine.

Creamy mushroom risotto, a slow-roasted herb-crusted rack of lamb, charred peppers with garlic shrimp, and balsamic glazed short ribs. 2

It was a perfect balance, but more importantly, they were all her favorite comfort foods-things her mother used to make for her on special occasions.

Jade sat down, her mind in a daze. She took a bite of the short ribs. The familiar, rich flavor hit her palate, and before she could stop them, tears began to overflow.

Bastian’s mind went blank for a split second. He reacted instantly, pulling a silk handkerchief to wipe her face.

“Is it that bad? I tried to replicate the recipes I saw in your mother’s old notebooks. I had to consult a chef to get the seasoning right. If it’s terrible, don’t eat it. I’ll order something else.”

Jade tried to wipe her own eyes, but the tears kept coming.

“It’s not bad. It’s… it tastes exactly like my mom’s. I just… I miss her so much.”

Bastian reached out, resting a steadying hand on her shoulder.

“She’s watching over you, Jade. She’d want you to be happy. She’d want you to enjoy this.”

Jade leaned over the table, finally letting out the grief she’d been holding back for years.

Since her mother died, she’d been the one giving, the one compromising, the one taking care of everyone else.

But Bastian was different. He seemed to know exactly how to take care of her. For the first time in a long, long time, she felt truly cherished.

The day of John Walter’s 70th jubilee arrived.

Jade chose an antique landscape etching as a gift and drove to the Walter estate.

From a distance, she saw Hudson waiting by the gates.

She knit her brows and circled around to the back entrance, slipping through the garden to avoid him.
