Chapter 303 The Banishment

Chapter 303 The Banishment

It was the exact same way she had once been with Hudson…

She understood that mindset better than anyone.

When you care about someone, you want to give them the best of everything. You want to understand every part of them.

She had spent three years giving that to Hudson and received nothing in return. And yet, she was receiving it now from Bastian Hamlet, a man she’d only known for a few weeks.

Jade looked down, hiding her eyes, before looking back up to offer a formal thank you.

“Truly, Bastian. Thank you. I love them.”

Bastian didn’t answer. He reached into the box, pulled out a white jade hairpin, and met her eyes with an uncharacteristically serious expression.

“If you really want to thank me, let me put this in your hair. Consider it my fee.”

Jade laughed. After all the drama, his request was almost charmingly simple. She turned around, offering him the back of her head.

“Go ahead.”

Bastian stepped in close. The scent of her hair filled his lungs, making his pulse quicken. He held the pin with a steady hand and carefully slid it into her dark locks.

He pulled back and studied her for a long moment.

“Stunning. Only the best for you, Jade.”

Jade looked down, her fingers fidgeting. Her heart skipped a beat.

Hudson had taken Bert into the hospital for observation and gave a full report of the dinner disaster to John. After enduring a blistering lecture from the old man, he sat in the hospital parking lot and smoked several cigarettes, trying to settle his nerves before heading to the studio.

“Hudson.”

The voice made him jump. He looked up to find Amara standing by his car, holding a bouquet of lilies.

“I heard your father was hospitalized,” she said softly. “I wanted to come see him.”

Hudson drummed his fingers on the wheel, his eyes narrowing.

“He was admitted ten minutes ago. Your intel is remarkably fast, Amara.”

Amara went stiff, her grip on the flowers tightening. She put on a wounded expression.

“Have you forgotten? I’m still in touch with your cousins. I saw their posts and came as fast as I could. Why does it sound like you’re

accusing me of something?”

Ever since she’d heard the simulation of Ronald’s voice in her villa, she’d been a nervous wreck. She hadn’t dared approach Hudson for days, terrified she’d say the wrong thing and expose herself.

But she had to maintain the act. She had to stay in his good graces.

Now she regreted not bringing Cortney with her, or Hudson would have been nicer than he was.

Hudson didn’t say if he believed her or not. The sharpness in his eyes simply faded into a cold indifference.

“Don’t worry about it. Go home.”

Those comforting words put a smile on her face.

“But I want to see Bert-”

“I have business. Go home, Amara.” Hudson’s voice was flat. He didn’t wait for a reply before pulling away.

Left coughing in a cloud of Hudson’s exhaust, Amara watched his taillights fade. She stomped her foot in a fit of pique, hurled the lilies into a nearby trash bin, and barked a sharp order to her driver to tail him.

A visit to Bert was the furthest thing from her mind. She’d just wanted to waltz into that hospital room on Hudson’s arm-a calculated performance to flaunt her status to the relatives and show them exactly who was in charge.

She never expected him to go off-script, let alone ditch her on the sidewalk like some irrelevant after-thought.

She was going to see for herself what “urgent business” could possibly be more important than keeping her happy.

The car led her straight to a neighborhood she knew all too well. When the sign for Metamorphosis Studio came into view, Amara began to shake with fury, her jaw clamped so tight she could hear her own teeth grinding.

“That b*tch, Jade Merchant. Again.”

Jade was a permanent roadblock, constantly sabotaging her plans and trying to steal Hudson away.

She couldn’t let that woman keep stirring up trouble. Jade had to be removed.

Hudson stepped out of the car and walked to the studio entrance, but he didn’t even make it to the door.
