“It’s you who’s always keeping things from me. Don’t turn it around!” Jade retorted.

Hudson stared at her for a moment, then slowly released his grip. “Fine. I’ll believe you for
now.”
Jade stayed silent. Hudson gestured dismissively. “Go pack my bags. I’m flying overseas for a business trip later.”
Jade dragged out her response. “O-kay…”
A thought occurred to her. “How long will you be gone?”
Hudson gave her a sidelong glance. “About a week. I’ll be back as soon as I can. You can call or text me, but don’t overdo it.”
Jade looked at him dismissively. Without a word, she turned and went upstairs.
Only when she reached the master bedroom did her tense body begin to relax. Her palms were clammy with cold sweat, a gross, uncomfortable feeling.
But Hudson being away for a week was good news for her. It meant he’d be busy, with no time to pay attention to her.
She could use this time to make proper plans for herself and the baby. After all, Hudson was sharp. She’d barely managed to dodge his questions this time. Next time, she might not be so lucky.
Eager to get him out of the house, Jade efficiently packed his clothes. Finished, and noticing he hadn’t come up yet, she went back downstairs.
In the living room, she heard voices from the backyard and moved closer.
“Mom, do you have to nag me about having a baby every
time
you call?
“Alright, alright. I know.
“You know exactly why Jade and I got married. If we had a child, it would just be a burden. What’s the point?”
A burden? He actually said a child with me would be a burden… Jade dug her nails into her palm, tears welling in her eyes. Her already battered heart felt freshly lacerated.

Her other hand had moved to her stomach, clutching her clothes tightly. The image of Hudson telling Cortney to think of him as her daddy flashed in her mind.
Of course. She never had a place in his heart. If they had a kid, he couldn’t marry Amara.
It was just as she’d thought. Even if he knew she was pregnant, Hudson wouldn’t want this baby. She had to keep the pregnancy a secret. Absolutely no one could know.
In the backyard, Hudson sensed something and looked toward the house. The living room was
empty.
Frowning, he went upstairs. His luggage was packed neatly, but Jade was gone.
He went to the third-floor guest room and heard the sound of running water from the bathroom.
Moments later, Jade emerged, her face wet, her eyes unmistakably red from crying.
Hudson was taken aback.
Jade hadn’t expected him either. She took a step back, intending to return to the bathroom, but before she could move, Hudson grabbed her wrist. He pulled out a tissue and wiped the water from her face.
“If you’re going to miss me this much, you should have said so earlier,” he said, a hint of something in his voice.
Jade turned her head away, her voice muffled. “You’re imagining things. I won’t miss you.”
“Still being stubborn?” Hudson wrapped an arm around her waist. As Jade looked up, he lowered his head and captured her lips.
Jade had a small beauty mark on her lip, subtle, but something Hudson was particularly fond of.
Every time he kissed her, he liked to tug at it, sucking until it was swollen and red. This time was no different.
But Jade didn’t want it. She used all her strength to push him away.
“Hudson…”
She only got his name out before his tongue pushed back in, stealing her words and her breath. Jade felt dizzy, her body going limp, her mind foggy.
