Jade yelled, “I’m a person, Hudson, not a machine. I have feelings. I can get hurt. I’m choosing to walk away. Divorcing you is letting you go, and giving myself a way out. Isn’t that enough? What more do you want from me? Do you have to drive me to the brink to satisfy your resentment?”

Hudson was silent. He was silent again!

His silence slowly drove her to the edge of sanity. Sometimes silence was worse than fighting. At least a fight was a release.

But Hudson just stayed quiet, watching her fall apart with cold, detached eyes.

Jade’s eyes were red, her hair a mess from struggling. Right now, she looked like pushed past her limit, on the verge of breaking down.

Jade said, “Hudson, if you’re holding a grudge because I used the act of saving your grandfather to force you to marry me, if that kept you from being with Amara, and you want to punish me for it, fine. I’ll take it. I shouldn’t have been so naive to think you could ever love

me…”

She dug her nails into her palm, then brought her hands up to cover her ears, to clutch at her neck. The physical pain was a distraction from the suffocating ache in her chest.

Jade shouted, “I’m awake now! I’m done dreaming. Just give me a timeline. What do I have to do to get you to sign the papers?”

Hudson noticed her movements. He stepped forward quickly and grabbed her wrists. His eyes fixed on the red marks she’d left with her nails on her neck.

A cold, sharp anger rose in him.

“Jade!” His voice was harsh. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing? Hurting yourself won’t make me change my mind. I’ve told you. I won’t abandon Amara and Cortney. Can you please stop pushing me?”

“I’m not pushing you!” Jade screamed, her chest heaving, her face flushed. She looked like she might pass out. “I want a divorce, Hudson. I want… a divorce…”

She clutched her chest, her voice fading. Black spots danced before her eyes. Her legs gave way, and she slumped against him.

“Jade! Jade!”

Chapter 25 Doctor

Hudson caught her, shouting toward the door, “Rosa! Get the doctor!”

The word “doctor” hit a nerve. Jade pinched her thigh hard, forcing herself to stay conscious.

She grabbed Hudson’s arm. “No… don’t call a doctor. I don’t want one.”

Hudson looked down at her pale face, his expression darkening. “Don’t be ridiculous. Not now.”

“Hudson, I… I…” Jade panicked, her mind blank.

If a doctor came, they’d find out about the baby.

She didn’t know how Hudson would feel about it, but judging by what he’d said before, he probably wouldn’t want it.

This baby was hers alone. She’d decided to keep it, and she had to protect it.

As Hudson moved toward the door, her grip on his arm tightened.

“Hudson, I don’t want a doctor…” She pressed her cheek into his palm. “I’m… scared of doctors. Just… put me down. I’ll be fine in a minute.”

The feel of her soft, warm cheek against his hand made Hudson’s resolve waver. He paused, then turned back and laid her on the bed, pulling the covers up around her.

“Fine. No doctor. But tell me if you feel worse.”

He bought it. Jade let out a shaky breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Her hands under the covers were slick with cold sweat.

“Okay.” Jade nodded.

Hudson brushed the sweat-dampened hair from her forehead, then stood up.
