Hudson took two steps toward them, then stopped. He turned back and looked at Jade, who hadn’t said a word.

“Jade, do you want me to go?”

Jade stood as still as a statue. Her face was a mask of indifference.

“Go if you want. It’s your choice.”

Hudson suddenly strode back to her and gripped her shoulders.

“Jade, aren’t you even going to try and stop me? Do you really care this little?”

Jade didn’t pull away. Her gaze was flat, filled with a weary, soul-crushing exhaustion.

“Would it matter if I did? I tried a thousand times before, and you always turned your back on me. I’m done trying.”

She looked past him toward Bert and Emily.

“It’s gone too far. There’s no point in arguing anymore. Since my parents are here, let’s settle this. What do I have to do to get you to sign the divorce papers?”

Hudson’s hands slid down to her wrists, his grip tightening.

“I’m not divorcing you! I never intended for us to end. I told you we could go back to the way things were. Stop trying to leave!”

Jade’s wrists ached under his grip, but she didn’t look at him. She stared stubbornly at Emily.

Her intuition told her Emily might be her only way out.

Emily frowned, about to speak, when Bert cut in.

“You think marriage is a game? You think you can just quit when it gets hard? Talk to your husband like an adult. You’re both young. The baby is gone, but there will be others. Stop being so stubborn.”

With that, he looked at Emily and gestured toward the door.

“We’re leaving.”

Emily gave Jade one last look, then followed Bert out the door without another word.

Jade felt a surge of disappointment, but she wasn’t surprised.

Ultimately, with the scandal Hudson and Amara had caused, Bert and Emily needed Jade to stay and help salvage the family’s reputation.

The Walters valued their image above all else. They wouldn’t break their rules for her.

“Jade.”

Hudson’s hands were still locked on her wrists.

Since she wouldn’t look at him, he shifted to catch her eye.

“Do you really not care at all anymore? You used to love me so much.”

There was a faint, pathetic hint of wounded pride in his voice.

Jade let out a cold laugh and wrenched her hands free.

“I did love you. Now, I hate you more than I can put into words!”

“Don’t hate me,” Hudson said, pulling her back into his arms.

“I know you’re still hurting because of your mother’s ashes. That was an accident. Cortney didn’t mean it. I told you I’d make it up to you. Don’t—”

“Shut up!”

Jade screamed the words, her shoulders shaking with the force of her rage.

“You don’t get to mention my mother. You destroyed her, Hudson. I will hate you for the rest of my life! You don’t want a divorce? Fine. Then we’ll spend our lives making each other miserable. Let’s see who breaks first!”

“Jade…” Hudson looked lost. He didn’t understand why she refused his reparations. He’d been

as sincere as he knew how to be.

“You just had surgery. You shouldn’t be this upset. I’ll have Rosa make you some chicken broth

tomorrow.”

“I don’t want your fake kindness!”

Jade’s breathing slowed as she pushed him away. She turned toward the stairs.

Suddenly, Hudson noticed her hand. It was empty.

He remembered clearly that she’d been wearing the ring earlier.

In disbelief, he caught her wrist and lifted her hand to examine it.

The pink diamond he’d had custom-made was gone.

“Where’s the ring?”
