Hudson Walter recalled the previous times he had watched Jade defend Julian and get tangled up with him, a surge of sour jealousy instantly flooding his chest.
Then a thought occurred to him, and a faint, mocking smirk appeared on Hudson’s lips.
“Where is that car headed now? A hotel? Or Julian’s private residence here in the city?”
Kevin Bickford wore an expression of intense discomfort, but risking a lethal glare, he bit the bullet to speak the truth.
“Mr. Walter, your wife isn’t that kind of woman.”
Hudson looked over, his gaze as sharp and cutting as a blade.
“Did I say she was?”
Kevin remained silent.
He was momentarily confused about whether Hudson truly cared about his wife or not.
If he didn’t care, the panic Hudson had displayed when he saw her fall from that wall moments ago had been unmistakably real.
But if he did care, his behavior seemed entirely contradictory… 1
Kevin dazed out for two seconds before snapping back to find Hudson staring at him, quickly bowing his head to answer with mechanical precision.
“At the moment, Mrs. Walter has stepped out of the car at her apartment on Sycamore Road.”
Hudson couldn’t tell if it was relief or some other emotion, but the dark gloom in his eyes eased slightly.
“Have people watch her. The second she makes move, I want to be the first to know.”
Kevin realized the previous tension had passed without a deep interrogation and let out a massive sigh of relief.
“Yes, sir.”

As they were speaking, Bert strode into the room, his piercing gaze scanning the perimeter.
“Where is Jade? I’ve summoned a specialist to check her vitals; tell her to get down here immediately. She’s too thin-if she doesn’t gain weight, how will my grandson get the nutrients he needs?”
“Dad!”
Hudson rose from his chair, his brows knit into a tight, frustrated line.
“Why did you kidnap Jade and lock her up here without consulting me? Do you realize she was nearly injured?”
Bert let out a heavy, disgusted snort through his nose.
“Your mother asked her nicely at the hospital, but she insisted on being defiant. After the mess she caused, she should be home being a devoted wife and mother, reflecting in silence, not trying to parade around in public every single day. Is that how a daughter-in-law should behave?”
“Jade is an individual with her own life. I gave her my permission to work,” Hudson said, pressing firmly against the bridge of his nose.
“Don’t harass her anymore.”
Bert shot Hudson a scathing look, returning to his original question.
“I asked you where she is.”
“She hates it here,” Hudson replied. “She went back to her own apartment.”
“You-”
Bert jabbed a finger at Hudson’s nose, his chest heaving with rage before he dropped his hand and began pacing the floor, his face turning a lethal shade of purple.
“I’m telling you, since she’s carrying a child, she will stay home and ensure that pregnancy is safe! If she’s out in public and something happens to my grandson, can she handle that responsibility? You’re siding with her? She’s delusional, but are you losing your mind as well?”
Hudson fell silent, and Bert issued his final, uncompromising ultimatum.
“Find a way to bring her back immediately. She is to stay home and focus on her health; until the baby is born, she goes nowhere! If you can’t handle it, I will take care of it personally!”
He knew that once his father intervened, the results would be catastrophic and unstoppable.

Just like the scandal online, or the reckless decision to bring Jade to the estate.
Every move they made was pushing Jade into a corner with no hope of escape.
Hudson thought of this, and the image of Jade filling from the wall made his heart stop for a beat; he gritted his teeth and accepted the order
“I will find a way to bring her back as soon as possible.”
Jade returned to her apartment, looking at the small decorations she had placed with such
care, and finally felt a sense of belonging.
She showered and curled up under the quilt, her exhaustion finally winning as she drifted into a deep sleep.
When she woke again, the world was bathed in the dim light of dusk.
Bzz-
Her phone on the nightstand began to vibrate.
She picked it up to see a message from Julian.
“Something came up in Harbor City that I need to handle personally. If you need anything, message me or call Jeff Mond; he has my authority to help you.”
Below the message was Jeff’s personal number.
Jade stared at the screen for a long moment, her fingers hover-typing before deleting and starting over several times until only three words remained.
“Get some rest,”
Julian’s response arrived surprisingly fast.
“You as well.”
Jade rubbed her ears, which were suddenly burning for no reason, and went to wash her face; seeing the fridge was empty, she changed and headed to the market.
When she reached the ground floor, she spotted a tall, lean silhouette by the garden, and her brows drew together in a frown.

She gripped her grocery bag, pretending she didn’t see him, and quickened her pace toward the exit. (3
