Egan strolled up to Adolphus, his eyes shining with a teasing smile. “Want me to dig into Theodora’s background?” he asked, sounding like he was just picking a snack.
The guys hanging around nearby picked up on Egan’s casual tone and tensed up. They could feel something wasn’t right. The school doctor definitely wasn’t just some harmless staff member, and he definitely wasn’t someone they wanted to cross.
“Yeah, check it out for me. And let her father know that Adolphus expects him for a private sit-down.”
The name Adolphus hung in the air and hit them all at once. Every one of these boys came from families with social clout, so they all had their eyes on the movers and shakers in Cabinda. That was where politics, money, and power all mixed together, and everyone wanted in. The Lane family sat at the very top, and Adolphus Lane was basically a living legend among the younger crowd. They all knew what that name meant.
One boy stared at Adolphus, brain working overtime while his mouth just sort of dropped open. “Wait… you’re Adolphus?” he stammered.
Adolphus had just turned to leave, but at that, he stopped and looked back at them. He didn’t bother to explain or confirm. Coldly, he said, “Go home and wait for updates. Don’t think you can just walk away from this.”
He stepped up onto the stairs, his long stride carrying him into the grand lobby of Azure Heights. The guys he left behind felt their legs go weak. One of them just sat down abruptly, too shaken to stand.
Egan watched them nearly fall to pieces and let out a quiet laugh. “Seriously, did you really have to make things harder for yourselves? He wasn’t even angry before, but now look. You wanted attention, you got it.” He gave them one last look and then walked off to get started on Theodora’s background check.
He couldn’t help but sigh. What a day.
