Egan glanced at Laurinda and Adolphus and didn’t need to guess what had gone on between them. He silently cursed Adolphus. That guy… seriously.

Adolphus and Laurinda lounged in the living room. Egan sat across from them, catching sight of the red mark on Adolphus’s neck. He narrowed his eyes, putting it all together. No wonder these two had slept in. It must’ve been some night.

When he looked up, Adolphus was staring back, obviously not amused. Egan rubbed his nose and tried to pass it off with a sheepish grin.

“Anyway… I wanted to tell you, we just got word from Nine. Thurston checked Theodora and Peter out of the hospital first thing this morning. He arranged for both of them to be sent back to their hometown.”

“Wait, who’s Peter?” Laurinda asked. She was still piecing everything together. She’d already heard plenty about Theodora’s drama from classmates—especially about all the bullying. Letting her just leave felt too easy.

“Peter is her brother. Don’t worry, they’re leaving, but that doesn’t mean we’re letting them get away with it.” Adolphus noticed the look in Laurinda’s eyes and explained further. “Theodora tried to get Peter to go after you last night, so I had Nine take care of him. Broke both his legs. Once they’re back home, someone else will pick up where we left off.”

Laurinda gave a small, knowing smile. She thought she understood why Adolphus hadn’t made a move at Apex. “It’s always better to pull the problem out by the roots.”

“I promise, I’m not the kind to leave unfinished business.”

Egan listened to the two of them chat so casually about all this and felt a cold shiver crawl up his spine. These two were on a different level; they weren’t leaving any chance for trouble to come back on them. He told himself again, these are definitely not people you want to mess with.

Laurinda spent an extra two days at the manor. One evening, when York came home, he headed straight for Laurinda’s study and set a folder down in front of her.
