Sylvia kept her eyes on the road, but her voice was firm as she glanced in the rearview mirror. “Don’t let him scare you. He wouldn’t dare.”

“But I’m terrified, truly,” Amy stammered, wringing her hands. “When he loses his temper, he’s reckless. I’m so scared he’ll hurt my family.”

Milanda’s tone was sharp. “How did you end up with a boyfriend like that?”

Tears welled up in Amy’s eyes. She couldn’t stop herself from crying.

Milanda sighed. “Then should we call the police?”

“No, please don’t!” Amy blurted out, panic in her voice. “That’ll only make him angrier!”

Sylvia thought for a moment. “Honestly, knowing Harry’s type, the police won’t help much. At worst, he’d spend a few days in jail. When he gets out, he’ll just come after Lydia with even more rage.”

Amy nodded immediately, her eyes wide with fear. “If I call the police, he’ll definitely come after me.”

“So what do we do?” Milanda clenched her fists. “Are we just supposed to let him get away with this?”

“As long as Harry can’t find Lydia for a while, he can’t do anything to her,” Sylvia said. “Let’s have Lydia stay at the office for a few days. Don’t let her see him. We’ll figure out a plan in the meantime.”

Amy nodded. For now, it seemed like the only option.

Back at the office, Milanda grabbed the first-aid kit and sat Amy down on the couch to tend to her bruises.

Sylvia knelt beside Amy. “Have you eaten anything tonight?”

Amy shook her head. “I haven’t had a bite since lunch.”

Sylvia poured her a glass of warm water and pulled out her phone to order some food.

Half an hour later, the delivery arrived—and so did Eugene.

He’d spent the whole afternoon at a nearby café, thinking about how good their matcha pastries were. He bought two boxes for Sylvia, but when she didn’t answer his calls, he worried she was still at work and decided to drop by. He was relieved to find her there.

“What happened?” Eugene asked, eyebrows raised when he saw Amy’s battered face.
