But a middle-aged woman like Debbie wasn't his ultimate goal.
He had standards, after all.
Who wouldn't want a younger, more powerful benefactor?
Bella sized Lucas up. “Ms. Harris? Miss Ward?”
She stared at him. He didn’t seem stupid. Usually, men who served older women called them by more intimate names. It seemed Lucas was smart enough to use formal titles in front of her. He certainly knew how to play his part.
Lucas replied, “Does that bother you, Miss Ward? It's how we address clients in our line of work. If you prefer something else, I can change it.”
“No need.” Bella stood in the doorway, making no move to invite him in.
“I was just hoping to chat with Ms. Harris. Since she's not here, it's fine.
Don’t bother telling her I came by. It's late, and I need to get some rest.”
With that, she started to close the door. Lucas politely took two steps back, his smile gentle. “Goodnight, Miss Ward.”
Without another word, they parted. As Bella shut the door, Lucas's gentle and obedient demeanor struck her as strangely satisfying.
Sebastian was always the one looking down on others.
Growing up, all the men she had known were superior.
She was the one with the humble background, who had endured countless insults alongside her mother.
Even now, after achieving some success in her career through her own efforts, she was still looked down upon by many.
The Blake family made their disdain for her status perfectly clear.
But with someone like Lucas, she suddenly felt… noble.
