"Seriously, she's not even home. You guys should just leave.
And please don't let other residents see you hanging around here, trying to bribe me. We'll lose our jobs."
As he finished speaking, Brandon slipped him another thick envelope. "My friend, I'll leave you my business card. If you see my sister come back, could you give me a call? This is just a little something for your trouble."
The guard took the money and pocketed it, but his words were noncommittal. "Mr. Mercer, please don't make things difficult for us. We're just working guys here.
Halfridge Villas has very strict management, and any one of the residents in here is a big shot.
I can't just go around disclosing a resident's whereabouts. Besides, if I get caught doing something against company policy, I'm out of a job."
Brandon gave him a knowing look and slipped him another envelope. "Don't worry. I know it's against your company's rules, but as long as none of us say anything, no one will know. And if anything should happen to your job, the doors to my company are always open for you."
The guard reluctantly agreed. The two brothers, however, found a nearby parking spot and decided to just wait in the car.
They sent the driver home and prepared to sleep in the vehicle.
The car was spacious enough, but neither of the brothers was used to roughing it. After a single night, they were both aching all over.
"This is miserable. That ungrateful brat Lillian is probably doing this on purpose, avoiding us. She won't even see us. It's clear she really plans to cut ties with us."
Brandon looked out the window and sat up. "We can't wait any longer. We have to find a way in. The guards change shifts. Today is Sunday, tomorrow is Monday.
Doesn't Lillian have a job? Is she just going to stay on vacation and never come back?"
