Colin rolled his eyes. “Brandon, this stuff was in Halfridge Villas. It belongs to the owner, not Lillian. It’s not junk; it’s all valuable. A custom glass art table, a dozen antique pieces, and countless rare and exotic plants. Did you hear me? Rare and exotic plants, not just common flowers. And it’s not a matter of ‘how much it could be worth.’ For us, it’s already an astronomical price.”
Brandon was furious. “What? Astronomical? How much?”
“Over three hundred million dollars.”
Brandon stumbled and fell back into his chair, looking utterly defeated.
Then, as if remembering something, he asked, “When Dad went to Halfridge Villas to find Lillian, he didn’t meet her in that glass room in the backyard, did he?”
He remembered a glass art table. The last time he went to see Lillian, he thought he’d seen one in the glass room. The Mercers were a wealthy family, after all, and he’d been around fine things his whole life. That table looked expensive, and the decor in the glass room was indeed stunning. It wasn't just the exotic plants; there were also many beautiful decorative pieces. He hadn't been in the mood to look closely at the time, but a quick glance was enough to recognize that some of them were antiques.
Colin nodded. “That’s right. It was the glass sunroom built in the backyard. Brandon, do you think the owner of Halfridge Villas is crazy? Why would they put so many valuable things in a sunroom instead of keeping them safely stored away? Aren't they worried about the antiques oxidizing in that environment? Or the rare plants dying from the sun?”
Colin had never been there, so he was just guessing that a glass room was unsuitable for such things.
