Ethan was speechless. *Seriously? When did their relationship get this serious?*
"Ahem… well, Ms. Mercer, the staff at the Mercer estate had a falling out with Bella. With no one else in charge, Bella called the police on them, accusing them of robbery and theft. It seems they've arrested a woman named Martha. The officers who responded were the same ones who took you in yesterday. They thought this might be related to you, so they called me to ask if you were going to do anything about it."
Leonard finished his water. Lillian finally turned to look at Ethan.
"Martha? Bella called the police and had Martha arrested?"
"Yes."
Lillian scoffed, her voice cold with anger. "What a move. First me, and now she won't even spare the household staff. That mother and daughter have been using my grandmother's people for over two years without contributing a thing, and now they turn on them. They're so vicious they're trying to send them to prison. They're monsters."
"Need any help?" Leonard asked.
Lillian gave a small smile and set down the water glass. "You underestimate me, Mr. Prescott. Do you really think I can't handle something this small? You just rest and get better. I'm going to go pick her up. By the way, the staff at the Mercer estate are all my grandmother's most trusted people. They've been with her for half their lives. Do you think you could…"
Before Lillian could finish, Leonard already knew what she was going to ask.
He nodded and smiled. "Since they're all so loyal to you, bring them to Halfridge Villas. Consider them part of your dowry. From now on, I'll pay their salaries."
Lillian didn't quite register the rest of what he said, but the word "dowry" exploded in her mind like a firework.
