Lillian hadn't gone back to Halfridge Villas specifically for the weekend; she was just exhausted from visiting the factory on Saturday.
She could let everyone know she was sick and accept all their pity and sympathy.
But she couldn't afford to appear genuinely weak and helpless, as if she were on the verge of death.
Just as before Dr. Smith had told her the illness was treatable, she had to keep the news that she was dying a closely guarded secret.
That's why, whenever she felt tired or weak, she would distance herself from the Mercer family.
She was fully aware of the Mercer family's indifference.
They had taken her home to recuperate, and she had gone back. But aside from giving her back her old room, what special care had her father and brothers shown her?
Did they personally make her a bowl of soup? Did they hand-deliver her medicine?
Their care was all on the surface, never from the heart.
They just spent some money to hire doctors and nurses, then outsourced all responsibility and concern. They went about their business as usual, thinking they had done right by her.
And she was even expected to be grateful for it. If not, she was the one in the wrong.
Lillian had seen through her heartless father and brothers long ago. It had been the same when they raised her as a child.
If it hadn't been for her mother and grandmother, she would have been like a feral child with no one to look after her.
Of course, in a wealthy family, there was no shortage of maids and servants. She never lacked for food or clothing and managed to grow up.
But genuine affection was scarce.
So, she had long since learned not to show her weakness to her father and brothers.
When she felt exhausted or weary, she would rather hide it than let them see.
Even when Brandon saw her looking frail, it wasn't on his turf, but in a place where she had full control.
Because she no longer trusted her father and brothers.
After a night of rest, medicine, and supplements, Lillian looked much better. So when Brandon came in a hurry to take her back to the Mercer estate, she agreed to go with him.
Once in the car, Brandon practically had the accelerator floored.
Lillian was used to speed, but she didn't trust Brandon's driving. At a red light, Brandon didn't even see it and blew right through.
She didn't even have time to warn him.
"Brandon, that was a red light! You ran it. What's wrong at home? Why are you in such a hurry?
"You're scaring me with this driving."
Lillian was indeed used to speed, but she had no faith in Brandon's driving skills.
He didn't have the skill to handle a sports car like she could.
Brandon was anxious and angry, but after hearing her, he slowed down a bit.
"Lillian, I'm just worried.
"You probably don't know what's going on at home right now.
"But you should have some idea of the state of the Mercer family's business.
