It was rare for Lillian to be so disciplined and reassuring.
Dr. Smith sat by Leonard's bedside, nagging, “Man, if you like her, just tell her. That Ms. Mercer seems like a good one to me.
“Sure, she's been married and has a kid, but I can see you don't care about that.
“The key is, the special connection you two have is something no one else can compare to.
“You've done so much for her, practically giving half your life to save her, and as it happens, she can save you too.
“I swear, fate has a twisted sense of humor.
“Aren't you two a match made in heaven?
“If I had known, I would have made sure you two met sooner. Why did she have to meet that brat first?
“It’s like life is deliberately making things difficult for you.”
Leonard couldn't speak, so he just glared at Dr. Smith with his eyes.
Dr. Smith wasn't looking at his face, so he was oblivious to Leonard's expression.
He just continued with his treatment, using every medical technique he could think of to keep Leonard alive.
It was quite a challenge for him, a Western-trained doctor, who had recently started studying traditional medicine to combine various treatments for him.
Dr. Smith was great at everything, except he was too chatty. He talked way too much.
With Lillian, he was better, since they weren't that familiar with each other.
But he was close with Leonard. He had practically watched him grow up and had always been his chief physician.
