Sebastian believed what Brandon said. How could Lillian not love him?
She'd only been in prison for two years. How could she have changed so much, so suddenly falling out of love with him?
Sebastian himself had never been able to make sense of her behavior.
Now, with Brandon's explanation, it was like a lightbulb went off in his head.
So that was it. She was sick and was trying to cut ties beforehand.
That Lillian… she must love him to the bone, thinking of him even as she was dying.
A wave of relief washed over Sebastian as he recalled the days she had spent trying to win him over. So, she hadn't stopped loving him after all. No wonder she'd wanted nothing in the divorce, even giving up custody of their child without a fight. It was because those things would be useless to her soon.
Sebastian felt a sudden pang of emotion, a feeling that quickly morphed into a secret flicker of delight.
He quickly suppressed it, feeling instead like he had been chosen by fate. It was a good thing he and Bella hadn't registered their marriage in Valerion, or he wouldn't have been able to grant Brandon's request now.
As it stood, only he and his lawyer knew about the divorce. Lillian herself had no idea. As long as he kept his mouth shut, he could pretend it never happened.
So, Sebastian nodded. "Don't worry. Now that I know she's sick, I won't abandon her.
"She helped me a great deal in the past. In a way, she was a great benefactor in my life.
"If I hadn't married her, I might not have been able to return and inherit the Blake family fortune.
"Now that she's ill, I'll take full responsibility for her.
"As for medical care, I'll find the best specialists for her. You can rest assured."
Brandon wiped away a tear and nodded. "Thank you, Sebastian. I'll send you Lillian's current address. You should go see her when you have time. She looks so frail and weak lately.
"Maybe she really needs your comfort. Sebastian, just hang in there. Maybe Lillian really doesn't have much time left. I'm not asking you to stay with her forever, just to be with her during this final period.
