Brandon was panicking. Sebastian not answering his phone was a death sentence.
Desperate, he called Hannah, the girlfriend he was planning to break up with.
Hannah was thrilled to see his name pop up. Brandon had been using the excuse of being busy lately, ignoring her calls and barely replying to her messages. For him to call her was a delightful surprise.
When she answered, Hannah excitedly tried to arrange a time to meet, but Brandon was in a rush and cut straight to the chase, asking where Sebastian was.
“How would a low-level employee like me know Mr. Blake’s whereabouts?” Hannah said, her tone souring. “Aren’t you and Mr. Blake brothers-in-law? You’re so close, why don’t you just call him directly? Or you could come to the company and find him yourself.”
It was clear Hannah felt neglected. Just a few days ago, Bella had hinted that wedding bells might be in their future. Instead of a proposal, all she got was the cold shoulder from Brandon. She’d never been treated like this by him before.
She wasn’t sure if a proposal was imminent or if a breakup was.
Hannah was well aware that she didn’t come from a wealthy family or have a prestigious background. She wasn't highly educated or exceptionally capable like Bella.
While she was attractive, she lacked the refined air of the socialites who constantly vied for Brandon’s attention.
Plenty of women in similar situations were trying to latch onto him, but Brandon had always seemed relatively faithful and more focused on his career.
That’s why Hannah believed she had a real chance of becoming Mrs. Mercer.
But now, she felt like she was being cast aside. Bella was too busy to help her, and every time she tried to see Brandon, he claimed to be busy.
Now he was calling, but not for her. Naturally, she was upset.
“Alright, stop making a fuss,” Brandon said impatiently. “I told you I’ve been incredibly busy at the office. I need Sebastian’s help with something important. Please, just find a way to get in touch with him for me. Once I sort this out, I’ll take you to buy that bag you wanted, okay?”
Hannah was easy to placate. The fact that he was willing to buy her a bag meant a breakup wasn't on the table, at least for now.
Her tone shifted immediately. “Mr. Blake is in a meeting with Miss Ward today. It’s a confidential tech meeting, so I can’t go in. They all left their phones outside the conference room. You’ll just have to wait for the meeting to end and for him to come out. He’ll probably see your missed calls and call you back. What’s so urgent, anyway?”
Before she could finish, Brandon said, “I got it. I’m really busy right now. Gotta go.”
Hannah wanted to say more, but he had already hung up.
Brandon figured Sebastian must be genuinely busy, which was why the transfer was delayed.
