Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 97

Realizing Emma was awake, Evan flinched with a hint of guilt.

He pushed himself up, trying to stand, but his body was stiff from holding the same position for so long. He stumbled, nearly falling back to the floor.

Emma pulled the hand he had been holding tightly and tucked it under the covers.

“Are you feeling any better?”

Evan stood by her bed, leaning over slightly. The moment he reached to check her forehead, Emma instinctively shrank back.

A flicker of stiffness crossed Evan’s face, but he stubbornly continued, pressing the back of his hand to her forehead. Only after confirming her fever had broken did he withdraw his hand.

“You had a fever late last night, and it was pretty high. I had Dr. Morrison come over to give you a shot and some medication. It finally came down this morning.”

As he spoke, he tucked the blanket around her again, as if terrified she might get cold.

But the room had floor heating; even in pajamas without a blanket, it was hardly cold.

Emma just hummed in response, not saying a word about falling into the water the day before.

“I’m sorry. About yesterday, I never expected…”

He sat down on the edge of her bed, unwilling to leave.

Emma shook her head, her expression indifferent. “It’s fine. You’re a busy man. It’s normal to have important matters to discuss.”

Her voice was hoarse, and she still seemed weak and drained.

He thought about last night, about how she had been in the water for so long, nearly dying, while he was in the drawing room talking business.

Guilt welled up inside Evan. Noticing her coldness, he scooted closer, a placating look on his face. “Are you angry with me? Emma, don’t worry, I’ll get to the bottom of what happened last night. I will investigate this thoroughly. Please, believe me, okay?”

As he spoke, Evan reached for her hand, pressing it against his cheek, his eyes pleading.
