Evan truly couldn’t believe it. He had never once imagined that Emma would one day find the resolve to actually leave him.
When she first mentioned divorce, his initial reaction after the rage subsided was to assume she was just throwing a tantrum, trying to get a rise out of him.
Daniel clapped his old friend on the shoulder. He wanted to say something comforting, but all that came out was a sigh. “Look, I’m in no position to give you advice. I’m a mess myself. But if you still have feelings for her, you have a chance as long as you’re not divorced. Don’t lose hope.”
Was there still a chance?
Evan didn’t know. He only knew that he was doing everything in his power to save their marriage. He wouldn’t let her go, just as years ago, she had been willing to risk everything to leave Riverside Millford with him.
Dr. Morrison emerged from the master bedroom and came to the glass door of the balcony.
Hearing the movement, Daniel nudged Evan’s shoulder, nodding toward the door.
“What is it, Dr. Morrison?”
Prompted by Daniel, Evan turned to see the doctor standing there. He opened the sliding door and stepped inside.
“Mr. Cooper, while I was preparing the medication, I realized I forgot to bring any anti-inflammatories. Do you happen to have any in the house?”
Evan rubbed the bridge of his nose, his expression weary. “There should be some in the study. I’ll show you.”
“Thank you, Mr. Cooper.”
Dr. Morrison followed Evan into the study.
He began searching through a large collection of bottles and containers.
