Emma's mind was blank when she left the hospital.
She stood at the entrance, watching the bustling traffic and the crowds of people on the street, and was suddenly struck by a sense of confusion.
She had followed Evan from Riverside Millford without a second thought, and her parents had disowned her for it. The year her beloved grandmother passed away, she was so busy in Averton City preparing for the company's IPO that she didn't even get to see her one last time.
That was a constant source of pain for Emma.
Thinking of it always broke her heart.
She crouched down, whether from the cold or for some other reason, she didn't know.
Emma had almost no friends in Averton City. After the company went public, Evan said he didn't want her to work so hard anymore and that she should just stay home and relax.
So she quit her job, left the company, and her life became singularly focused on Evan. She had come to see him as her entire world, never imagining that one day, that world would betray her so completely.
Emma didn't know what to do now.
So, standing here, Emma was lost. Because besides going home, she had no idea where else to go. Besides Evan, she had no one else to turn to.
Nathan finished the last of his paperwork in the department before leaving his office. He generally avoided the cafeteria during the peak lunch rush, so he often ate a little later than everyone else.
Before he even reached the hospital exit, he saw a familiar figure crouched in a corner by the main doors.
Her hundred-thousand-dollar bag was tossed carelessly on the ground beside her. She had her face buried in her hands, perfectly still, looking very unwell.
Despite his poor impression of Emma, a doctor's sense of responsibility towards a patient took over. Nathan walked over without hesitation.
"Are you all right?"
A detached, cold voice sounded from above her.
Emma lowered her hands and looked up to see the incredibly aloof doctor.
He leaned down slightly to look at her and asked again, "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
