He was still dressed in a suit and tie, but he lacked his usual formal demeanor, showing a flash of the reckless charm of his younger days.
Emma was silent for a long moment before finally asking, "Is your meeting over? What about Ms. Miller? When will she be back?"
Evan glanced at his watch. "She should be here in a few minutes. I heard that guy was giving you a hard time, so I came out to check on you. I'm glad you're okay. I have to get back to my meeting now."
With that, he stood up, leaned down to kiss Emma's forehead, then turned and left the office.
Just as Evan had said, Ms. Miller appeared before Emma exactly eight minutes later.
The people at their company were generally very punctual.
"Mrs. Cooper, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting."
Ms. Miller, her hair slicked back immaculately, adjusted her glasses.
She and Jason were both long-time employees, having been with Evan since the company's early days.
Emma stood up and offered a polite smile. "It's no problem, Ms. Miller. Thank you for taking me to the mall."
Ms. Miller was a few years older than Emma and Evan, thirty-seven this year, married with children. Her husband also worked for Evanma Group, but at a branch in a neighboring city.
Ms. Miller managed a stiff smile. "It's my job, Mrs. Cooper. Mr. Cooper assigned it to me."
She wasn't one for pleasantries, and social graces weren't her strong suit, but her work ethic and efficiency were second to none.
Emma led the way out of the office and down to the underground parking garage, where Ms. Miller got behind the wheel.
