Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 262

"Mom... Mom..."

Emma whispered urgently from behind. She didn't want Evan to drive them home, and she certainly didn't want him to find out her new address.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Karen Hayes calmly opened her messaging app, made no effort to hide her chat with Emma, and replied: [Might as well make use of him.]

After everything he'd done to her daughter, it would have been one thing if he stayed out of their lives after the divorce. But since he had the nerve to show his face, who else was she going to annoy?

Resigned, Emma got into Evan's car.

During the drive, Evan seemed to be having a pleasant conversation with Mrs. Hayes, though it was mostly him initiating topics and Mrs. Hayes offering selective replies.

The atmosphere in the car wasn't exactly warm, but it wasn't frosty either. When they arrived at her apartment complex, Evan's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly as he saw that Emma's new home was in such a crowded, high-rise building.

"Alright, thanks for the ride. We haven't made dinner, so we won't invite you up. Goodbye."

Unable to stand another second, Emma quickly dismissed Evan and walked into the complex with her mother.

Evan stood there, watching Emma's retreating figure until she was completely out of sight before turning and getting back into his car.

Inside the elevator, Emma whispered disapprovingly to her mother, "What was that all about? We're already divorced. Why did you let him drive us home? It was so awkward."

Karen Hayes glanced at her daughter, exasperated. "Look at you, getting so worked up. What's there to be awkward about? You didn't do anything wrong! He's the one with a guilty conscience, and he's not acting awkward. Why should you?"
