Melissa looked timidly at Karen Hayes.
Although the older woman was dressed plainly, clearly from a small town or the countryside, her calm and solemn expression sent a shiver down Melissa's spine.
"H-Hello, ma'am..."
Melissa's voice trembled slightly. She knew this was Emma's mother and that Daniel was trying to help her out of a jam, but still...
"Well now, this one looks so young."
Out of nowhere, Mrs. Hayes offered a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "It really is nice to be young."
With that, she didn't spare another glance at the people in front of her, taking her daughter's hand and heading toward another part of the supermarket.
Emma was stunned. She was long over Evan. There was no hate, no love—just a faint indifference, as if he were a stranger. So, when she saw Evan and Melissa together, she didn't feel much of anything, other than a brief worry about how her mother would react.
But now, looking at her...
The timid old woman who had just arrived in the city was gone. The moment she saw Melissa, all her previous reticence vanished, replaced by a commanding presence.
Emma gave her mother a mental thumbs-up.
"Hmph. Did you tell him?"
Karen Hayes asked without turning her head, still holding her daughter's hand as she walked forward.
Emma turned, looking at her mother with a mixture of confusion and hurt. "No... Why would I tell him? We're divorced," she said plaintively.
Karen Hayes let out a cold laugh and dropped the subject, changing tracks. "It was because of that girl just now, wasn't it?"
It was because of that young girl that their marriage fell apart, right?
