Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 257

It wasn’t until he started his afternoon shift that Nathan heard about Emma’s discharge.

By then, Kelly had already completed the paperwork and left the hospital, so he didn’t know the details. When the nurses’ station told him Emma had been discharged that morning, his first thought was that something had gone wrong, or that she had decided to stop her treatment.

Usually so composed, he didn’t even go back to his office. He immediately dialed Emma’s number.

When Nathan called, Emma was at the mall with her mother. Seeing the caller ID, she paused for a moment before telling her mom she was going to the restroom and stepping away from the table.

“Hello, Mr. Allen?”

As the woman’s voice came through the phone, Nathan could hear the noisy chatter of a crowd in the background. He demanded, “Where are you?”

“Um… at the… the mall.”

For some reason, Emma always felt a strange sense of fear and timidity around Nathan, especially when she had done something wrong.

“What are you doing at the mall instead of staying in the hospital? Are you not aware of your current condition? Emma, what are you thinking?”

Nathan’s questions were cold and harsh.

Emma carefully held the phone to her ear. Several people passing by were looking at her.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Allen, I forgot to tell you. I was just discharged from the inpatient ward, but I’m not stopping my treatment…”

Emma’s face was etched with worry, though thankfully Nathan couldn’t see her expression over the phone.

“My mother is here, and she doesn’t know I’m sick. I don’t want to tell her and make her sad, so from now on, I’ll come to the hospital for my chemotherapy sessions every day. I just won’t be staying overnight.”

Afraid he was still angry, Emma quickly added, “I only found out this morning that she was coming, so I left in a hurry. I meant to ask Kelly to pass a message to you, but then I heard you weren't at the hospital this morning…”
