While her mom was washing up, Emma hurried to the balcony to call Kelly.
“Hello, Kelly?”
Kelly’s voice came through the phone.
“Kelly, how are things on your end? Did Mr. Allen do his rounds?”
Kelly was packing. Since she was being discharged, everything in the hospital room had to be gathered up.
“Emma, a resident came by for rounds today. I think Mr. Allen took the day off.”
Hearing this, Emma felt a sense of relief. “Okay, then. Once you’re done with the discharge paperwork, come straight back. I’ll take you out to eat.”
“Alright, sounds good.”
After hanging up, Emma went into the living room and opened her mother’s large, woven bag, intending to help her organize its contents.
She had expected her mother to take a long time in the shower, but just as she unzipped the bag, the bathroom door suddenly opened from the inside.
Mrs. Karen Hayes, fresh from her shower, walked out wearing a pair of her daughter's cherry-print pajamas.
“You’re done already?”
Emma was a bit surprised. She walked over and picked up a clean towel to dry her mother’s hair.
“Oh, no, you sit down. I can do it myself.”
Seeing her daughter trying to dry her hair, Karen instinctively grabbed the towel and took her daughter’s hand.
