She hung up and put the phone back where it was.
This time, the phone finally stayed quiet. No more vibrations.
Emma huddled under the covers, curled into a ball, giving the call no further thought. All she could think about was how she absolutely had to get an electrician to install a new heating unit tomorrow. She was going to freeze to death otherwise.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, the night air in Averton City was a frigid 19 degrees Fahrenheit. Melissa stood outside the hospital building, her left hand holding her phone to her ear. All she could hear was the dial tone after the call was disconnected, but she remained frozen in place, unable to move for a long time.
She had mustered up a great deal of courage to finally call Evan.
She knew it was incredibly inappropriate for her father to call Evan and ask for money like that, so Melissa felt she had to explain, no matter what.
She needed to make it clear that she hadn't known about her father's call beforehand. While she was ashamed of what he had done, she also wanted Evan to know it wasn't her idea.
After spending a long time psyching herself up and rehearsing what she would say, Melissa had finally worked up the nerve to dial the number she knew by heart.
But…
She had expected him to answer quickly, but halfway through the ringing, the call was abruptly disconnected.
It was already eleven o'clock at night. Even if Evan had been busy with work, he should have been free by now. Thinking of this, Melissa immediately assumed that her father must have said something wrong during their call tonight, making Evan angry enough to intentionally ignore her.
This thought only strengthened her resolve to get through to him and explain.
