The message ended with a cute emoji of a pleading cat. It was rare to see this side of Emma, and Nathan couldn't help but smile at his phone screen.
He didn't refuse this time. He tapped to accept the payment and then replied, [Thank you.]
*Ding!*
[Emma: (Cute cat shaking its head emoji)]
After finishing her chat with Nathan, Emma took the rest of her medicine with the warm water her brother had just brought her. To keep her mom from worrying if she saw the medicine bottles, she put everything back into her storage box.
Once everything was put away, she lay down on the bed.
The temperature in Riverton City was only about 45 degrees Fahrenheit at night. While that was technically warmer than Averton City, homes in the south didn't have central heating like they did up north. Emma felt a chill even tucked under the covers.
Though the house had an air conditioner, it only blew cold air, so turning it on wasn't an option.
She decided she would call someone tomorrow to replace all the air conditioning units in the house with top-of-the-line models. Otherwise, she'd probably freeze to death during her stay.
But that thought did little to stop the chill spreading through her body. It was cold when she stayed still, and even colder when she moved.
Lying in the slightly warm bed, Emma stared listlessly at the ceiling. She didn't even have the energy to look at her phone. Her hands felt like blocks of ice; it was simply freezing.
*Knock, knock—knock, knock—*
A slow, rhythmic knock sounded at the door.
