Evan hadn't been back to his own home at all recently.
Every day after work, he drove straight to Kingsbridge Park. He owned a residence there, at Number 1 Kingsbridge Park, and had arranged for Melissa to stay there ever since they met at the hospital that night.
During the day, while he was at the office, Melissa would go to the hospital to be with Mr. Carter. In the evenings, a newly hired caregiver would take over, and Melissa would leave the hospital around dinnertime to go to the market, buy groceries, and cook, waiting for Evan to get home from work.
At eight o'clock in the evening, a sound came from the entryway. Evan, who was in his study, took off his glasses and came out to see Melissa just returning, grocery bags in hand.
"Why are you so late today?"
Evan's expression was neutral, his tone unreadable.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Cooper. Something held me up. You must be starving. I'll start cooking right away, just give me a moment..."
Melissa explained as she changed her shoes.
Her father's test results were not promising, and Melissa was deeply worried. But she didn't dare bother Evan with these things, afraid of souring his mood, so she kept it to herself.
She had thought that, given how late she was and how vague her explanation sounded, Evan might ask what was wrong.
But after hearing her out, Evan simply turned and went back into his study without another word, without another question.
His indifference made Melissa's heart ache. She stood frozen in place, suddenly feeling like she was nothing more than a live-in cook hired just for him. The thought brought a wave of sadness, but she didn't dare get upset with him. She just stood there silently for a moment before carrying the groceries into the kitchen.
Mrs. Carter had passed away when Melissa was young, so she had learned to cook at an early age. A dinner for two would normally take her only half an hour. But tonight, whether it was because of her father's condition or Evan's attitude, she was constantly distracted. She even cut her finger while chopping vegetables. By the time she had frantically finished cooking, it was already nine o'clock.
