Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 101

On an important occasion like the one yesterday, a committed couple wouldn't have needed to take the risk of fooling around in the woods.

So, after hearing Emma's account, Evan had a pretty good idea of what was going on.

When they got home, Emma went into the bedroom and locked the door from the inside.

Evan followed her up and found the door locked. He tried the knob gently, but it wouldn't turn. Remembering she was still sick, he didn't press the issue.

He just said, "Emma, if you don't need me to stay with you, I'm going back to the office."

It was almost the end of the year, and a mountain of work was waiting for him.

When he still got no response from inside, Evan paused for a moment before turning to leave.

Emma heard the sound of a car starting in the underground garage. She walked to the window, pulled back the white curtain, and watched until she saw Evan's black Bentley drive away. Only then did she let the curtain fall and return to her room, where she sat for a while longer.

An idea seemed to strike her. Emma opened the closet and spent a good while gathering her things, moving them all into the guest room next door. After that, she changed her clothes and left the house.

It was two in the afternoon, during work hours, when she arrived at the hospital.

When Nathan saw her, a rare flicker of guilt crossed his face.

Emma walked over, placed her bag on his desk, and sat down. "Mr. Allen, I had a fever last night and didn't get to take the special medication you prescribed. Will that have any effect?"

A lock of hair fell across her face, and she tucked it behind her ear with a sweep of her hand.

Nathan looked at her.

Her complexion grew paler each day, a lifeless weakness radiating from within.
