Simon clearly hadn't expected Andres to insert himself into a private call with Maeve. After a few seconds of silence, Simon said with a teasing lilt, "Do you know who's flying back into the country soon?"
Instinct warned Andres that Simon was about to drive a wedge between him and Maeve. Before Simon could drop the name, Andres reached out and ended the call for her.
Worried his action would piss her off, he quickly explained, "Don't listen to his nonsense."
Maeve popped the last bite of her breakfast into her mouth and raised an eyebrow. "So who exactly is flying back?"
Since he was doomed either way, Andres opted for honesty. "Nancy Grover."
Maeve didn't pause her chewing at the mention of the name. She asked, as casually as if discussing the weather, "Ex-girlfriend?"
Andres neither confirmed nor denied it. "We saw each other for a bit."
"So she's the 'white moonlight' ex, then?" she prodded.
Andres strongly rejected the label. "Hardly!"
