Chapter 476: A Chance

"I love you, Athena," Ewan declared huskily as he broke away grudgingly from Athena’s lips, resting his forehead against hers, their shaky breaths intertwining together. His voice was low, rough, yet painfully tender.

"I love you, so much that it aches. I know I’m not supposed to, but I’m glad you’re away from Antonio."

Athena swallowed, annoyed with her thirst for another round of kissing. What was it about his lips that drove sense and time out of her head?

And why was her tongue now loosened to say the words back, when it had always been tied up during her regime with Antonio?

"I know I did hurt you..."

She hushed him with a chaste kiss, her fingers trembling slightly as they touched his jaw. "Let’s not talk about it."

She couldn’t believe the lowness of her own voice—the silky seduction that laced through it, the tone that announced her intent and her desires.

A tone he answered to, before she could even say jack.

This time, when they came up for air, Athena knew that if they didn’t leave now, they wouldn’t be leaving for the night. And she didn’t think she was ready for that step—not with Ewan, not with the past, though diluted, still hanging over their shoulders.

What if he hurt her again? Broke her heart into pieces?

She knew it was a losing battle though. She already yearned for him, even though he was right there, barely an inch away.

She kissed him again, softly, leisurely—like she was savoring the sweetest meal on earth, one she wouldn’t want to finish. And when he groaned and deepened it, his hands tightening around her waist, drawing her flush against him, driving her into a deeper form of blissful abyss, she knew she was gone.

Dings from their phones broke them apart—not the startled kind of parting, but the slow, reluctant separation of people who couldn’t bear to let go.

She checked her phone first. Her frown caused a drunken-in-love, still-breathless Ewan to peer over at the screen.

A message from Kael.

"He said we should expect the gift tomorrow."

Ewan checked his own phone then, coming down from the high that had kept him floating above his worries. "Sent the same to me."

Athena was already getting up. "We should go. Talk with family..."

"Of course..." Ewan muttered, rising to his feet. He held her hand—surprising her—and they walked together out of the house. He led her to the passenger side of the car, as a gentleman would.

She blushed as he opened the door with a dramatic little bow.

"You are crazy."

"Yes," he said, his grin boyish and tender all at once. "Crazy in love with you."

She chuckled as she sat down, watching him close the door before hurrying over to the driver’s seat, smiling all the way.

"Strap in your belt," he said as he got in.

She obeyed without a fuss, stealing a glance at him as he did the same. What did this mean for them?
