Chapter 473: Spider

Athena wasn’t sure she could ever get used to this feeling—seeing how close Ewan had gotten to her children, the joy that shone on his face as he laughed with them over something she had no idea about but wished she did, just so she could be part of it.

Her heart warmed and ached all at once. It was always beautiful—watching him fit into their lives like he had always been meant to be there. Her son’s laughter rang through the room, easy and genuine, and she marveled at how relaxed Nathaniel looked. The laid-back attitude was one only she usually got to see, and a few others he carefully let in.

Her heart threatened to beat out of its cage when Nathaniel threw his head back and laughed, asking Ewan another question—one the man was all too eager to answer.

The sound tugged at something deep inside her chest. She felt that tight, fluttering ache of yearning, mixed with gratitude, and the faint thrill of something new blossoming between them.

It was dangerous, the kind of warmth that promised comfort and heartbreak all at once. Yet... she blushed.

And Athena was sure she wasn’t the only one noticing it. Already, Gianna was nudging her knee from the left, and Chelsea from the right.

These her girls! She bit back a snort, lips twitching. Now that the engagement with Antonio was practically off—because she was sure hell would freeze over before her grandparents ever allowed that marriage—her friends would intentionally, she was certain of it, try to fix her and Ewan.

As if they needed fixing, she mused, eyes drifting back to him as he gently lowered the twins to their feet. He ruffled Kathleen’s hair when she pouted, her tiny lips trembling in mock protest. The little one wanted to remain in his arms.

Could she blame her daughter?

Not at all. Last night, she herself had wanted to remain in those strong arms—those well-defined, secure arms that had felt like home. Her cheeks flamed, and she quickly looked away, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Spider... nice to finally meet you," Susan said, crossing her legs and getting Athena’s attention. Her gaze was assessing, scanning the infamous Spider from head to toe.

Spider looked amused, his lips quirking.

"What’s your real name?" Susan asked, arching a brow.

Spider smiled faintly, and Athena felt a pang of déjà vu as she looked into that handsome face—a face that could drive any woman mad with need. Where had she seen him before?

"Nice to meet you too, Susan. My name is Spider." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Susan scoffed softly. "Surely, that isn’t your birth name."

Spider only shrugged and took a seat on the sofa, the picture of calm mystery. Athena had to agree with Ewan’s earlier diagnosis: his friend was as private as they came.

She watched as Spider greeted everyone around, calling them by their names, his tone sincere as he thanked them for taking care of him.

"It was Ewan’s fault for coming late. I told him five minutes..."

Ewan scoffed, leaning back in his chair, his eyes glinting. "I’m not sure whether to be complimented or afraid of your trust in me. What you did was dangerous, Spider. You could have died."

Spider grinned, looking surprisingly chirpy for someone who had recently escaped death. "Well, I didn’t."

His gaze flicked to Athena then, steady and searching, and she realized with a jolt that he was studying her too—like he had known her from somewhere before, apart from what he had seen in the images. Like he was trying to remember something.

Maybe she would talk to him after this.

"Thanks, Doctor Athena," he said, the corner of his mouth lifting.

"You’re welcome," she replied, a teasing light in her eyes. "You can compensate by helping us with the matter on ground."

She flashed him a grin when he groaned.
