Chapter 460: Mole Strikes

Aiden understood Athena’s shock. He hadn’t believed it either when his search had yielded the same result—when he had watched the footage and seen Fiona, face hidden under a cap, walking briskly down an almost empty street, one of the many ghosted streets left by the event of the grey virus variant.

And like Athena now, he had been curious—how had Fiona found that formula? It could only mean one thing: she was with Mary and Matthew, the evil twins. The sponsor had somehow captured them, kept them together for easier monitoring.

Without much ado, he brought out his phone, played the recording, and handed it to Athena.

"Where? How..." she muttered, after watching the clip for the third time. The woman in the video was Fiona—no doubt about that. A thinner, more humbled version of her, considering the skinny jeans she wore.

"It was good we established that connection with your children’s friends," Aiden said, breaking her silence. "They helped retrieve this, including pinpointing the location of the area in that video." A short pause. "Their rates though... have you seen the amount they charge per hour?"

Athena had seen, and frankly didn’t care. "We can pay for it," she said. "I’m sure even the president would want to do the same, considering what we’re battling is of national importance. Not that I’ll involve him—I don’t want to be caged by the government."

Aiden nodded in approval. "So, do we commence the search on the location? It’s not that large. We can be done in less than a week, seeing that we’ll have to be discreet. We don’t know if there’s surveillance there."

Athena agreed. "As discreet as possible. We can’t risk them moving again."

A pause. Then her gaze softened. "I think this is good news. Only, I wish we could reach her..."

Fiona.

Was this her attempt at rebuilding bridges? Athena wasn’t sure—but she could say she was grateful. Grateful enough to forgive Fiona’s sins for saving her from the trap Kael had carefully orchestrated.

If not for Fiona, how would she have salvaged the situation? How would she have saved thousands of lives that had poured into the hospital just that week?

She was grateful too for Ewan’s discreet men, who had facilitated the transfer of vaccines to other facilities where they were needed. It had been a week of work—work, and more work—but somehow it felt easier knowing she had people with her. Her family.

"We’ll have to respect her decisions, I think," Aiden said quietly. "We don’t know the condition they might be in—if they’re hostages too."

Athena nodded. "Let’s hope she reaches out again. Till then, start the search. I would have loved to join you, but—"

"Of course not," Aiden interrupted with a small smile. "You have your hands full here."

Just as he spoke, her phone began to ring.

She frowned when she saw the caller ID—it was the president. She lifted it slightly toward Aiden. "Look who’s calling. Do you think something’s up?"

Aiden was just as surprised, his brows furrowed. "Pick up... let’s know what he wants."

She did, and put it on speaker. "Good morning, Mr. President."

"Good morning, Athena."

Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Athena concluded it immediately from his tone—sad, weary, on the brink of breaking. It was the first time she had heard the president sound anything but commanding or cheerful.
