Charlotte figured she just needed to placate him for now. As for later, she’d cross that bridge when she came to it.
Jonathan stared at her, seeing no trace of affection in her eyes—only fear and a desperate desire to distance herself from him.
Had their connection dwindled to less than that of passing acquaintances?
He admitted he was never short on female company and had never believed he could develop genuine feelings for any woman, let alone one who was married. He had approached her with a calculated motive, but his later efforts to help her had been sincere.
She could forgive Evander, who had broken her heart, so why couldn't she forgive him?
Suddenly, Jonathan seized her shoulders, his grip tightening as he pulled her into his arms. The abrupt movement sent a jolt of panic through her, and she instinctively struggled against him. "Jonathan, calm down!"
"You can give Evander a chance, so why can't you give one to me?" he pleaded, holding her tightly and burying his face in the crook of her neck. "You two are divorced, aren't you? With the way things are, he can't protect you! You have no idea what he's about to face."
Charlotte stiffened in his embrace. Noticing her pause, he softened his tone. "I'm not really going to marry Genevieve. The Pembrokes would never truly let her become their daughter-in-law. So don't worry, I won't let her hurt you."
As soon as the words left his mouth, she let out a scornful laugh. "Are you asking me to be your mistress?"
He froze and released her.
Calmly, Charlotte met his gaze. "You keep saying you won't really marry her, but to the rest of the world, she's the Pembrokes' daughter-in-law. And now you come to me with this? Are you trying to persuade me to be the other woman in your marriage?"
"That's not what I meant..."
"Jonathan, if you had any conscience, you wouldn't be here right now. Genevieve despises me. If she found out, how exactly could you protect me from her? You think Evander can't protect me, but you're so sure that you can?"
"Why couldn't I?" he challenged.
