Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 649

She had no idea how the banquet outside was progressing, nor did she care what the guests thought of the engagement party. It felt as if just by hiding here until it was over, she would have fulfilled her obligation to the Rayburn family.

A figure stopped silently at the door. For a moment, the silhouette made Charlotte's heart lurch, as if she were seeing a ghost.

She stared blankly for several seconds until Judd Carstairs spoke, his voice tinged with resignation. "It's me."

Charlotte snapped back to reality and slowly stood up to face him. "What are you doing here?"

She had invited Judd to the engagement party, but he was supposed to be in the banquet hall.

Judd glanced toward the hall. "I saw the groom had changed, so I asked Mr. Rayburn what happened."

She remained silent.

"It seems something has happened to the Howard family. Lilith asked me for leave last night," Judd said, his brow furrowed. "She left in a great hurry."

"Do you know what happened?" she asked urgently.

Judd shrugged. "They're keeping a tight lid on the news over there. It's unclear for now."

If there was a major crisis in the Howard family, all she could think of was Grandma Rosemary's safety. For Evander Howard to abandon such an important event, it had to be about more than just a dispute at Howard Enterprises.

Even Lilith had rushed back. Could the Sutherlands be involved?

Could it be...

Charlotte didn't dare to think any further.

Noticing her face turn deathly pale, Judd considered for a moment. "If you're that worried, come to the Capital with me in a couple of days." He paused before adding, "We have a partnership with Cloudcrest Medical Group, so I need to go check on the situation anyway."

She agreed immediately.

The day after the engagement party, everyone gathered at the Rayburn estate, including Elliot and Loretta.

"What on earth is going on with the Howard family? Missing such an important event! Even with a last-minute replacement, it still looks like a joke! Now, who knows what everyone is saying about us," Susy Rayburn lamented, pressing a hand to her forehead. She had been the one to plan the wedding banquet, only for such a drastic change to occur after a delay of just over half a month.
