Charlotte gave a helpless smile. "I know. I'm not that stupid. You don't really think I'd leave something so important just lying around at home, do you?"
Wesley stared at her, then at her mischievous grin, completely baffled.
"Mr. Rayburn, what… what's going on?"
"It's nothing. You can go back to your work," Charlotte said gently.
The housekeeper, not daring to ask more, scurried back to the kitchen.
Wesley put his hands on his hips and took a deep breath. He had been so worried that he had sped all the way home, terrified she would suffer the same fate as Kate.
After all, Charlotte had only recently returned to the Rayburn family. Quincy wouldn't dare make a move on him so openly yet, but that didn't mean he wouldn't go after Charlotte first.
Seeing his worry, Charlotte took his hand. "I'm not reckless. I deleted the recording on that pen a while ago, and it's unrecoverable. Besides, it was just a decoy."
"A decoy?"
"I wanted to see if Uncle Quincy was really after the evidence, so I deliberately left the pen at home. In fact, I was the one who tipped him off."
Wesley slapped a hand to his forehead, a look of exasperated amusement on his face before he burst out laughing. "You're actually provoking him now?"
"You and Uncle Caleb already knew about his affair with Hulda but didn't expose them. Doesn't that mean exposing them would, at most, just eliminate two competitors? But there's still Uncle Shane, who hasn't shown his face."
Charlotte crossed her arms and looked at him. "With all the trouble in the Rayburn family, even Susy has come back, but he's still nowhere to be seen. Aunt Kate was his half-sister. Even if the family bonds are weak, shouldn't he at least make an appearance for the sake of appearances?"
He took the call, forcing himself to calm down. "What is it?"
"You messed up, didn't you?"
The mocking tone on the other end sent Quincy into a rage. "Damn it, Shane Rayburn! What the hell do you mean by that? Are you calling to laugh at me?"
The man on the line chuckled softly. "We're in the same boat. Why would I laugh at you? If you can't handle it, I can help you."
"What do you mean, you can't handle it? You look down on me too? Let me tell you, don't think you're my brother now. In the future, you might have to call me stepfather!"
"If you could really handle it, your little affair with my mother wouldn't have been exposed. And I can tell you right now, not only does Wesley know, but Caleb knows too. On top of that, the old man has been favoring Caleb lately. I heard he's won over the head of the Chase family of Port Stellar. If you let him arrange a marriage alliance between Charlotte and one of the Chases, will there be any place left for you and me in the Rayburn family?"
