Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 647

The engagement party the next day was a relatively low-key affair. Though the venue had been meticulously decorated for months, many of the more tedious formalities had been streamlined.

The Rayburns were busy greeting the arriving guests. Aside from Mrs. Rayburn, Mr. Rayburn was also absent, officially on sick leave.

The guest list was mostly limited to close friends and relatives of the Rayburn family. While most of them likely guessed the real reason for Mr. Rayburn's absence, an unspoken understanding hung in the air.

Sean and Wesley Rayburn, father and son, stood outside the main hall to welcome everyone. Guests were steadily arriving, but the Howards were conspicuously absent.

“They can’t be late for something this important, can they?” Sean muttered, glancing at his watch.

A short while later, all the guests had been seated.

The hall buzzed with conversation and excitement.

In the dressing room, Charlotte Sterling finished her makeup. Figuring everyone had arrived by now, she rose, lifting the hem of her gown.

Loretta, holding Charlotte's purse, followed close behind, occasionally adjusting the train of her gown.

Before they reached the main hall, Susy Rayburn intercepted them. “Lottie, are the Howards not here yet?”

Charlotte glanced toward the crowd in the hall. The head table was still empty.

She couldn’t see Miranda Sutherland or Rosemary.

And more importantly, Evander Howard was nowhere to be found.

She bit her lip. “They must have been held up by something. They’ll probably be here soon.”

“The ceremony starts in ten minutes. You should call and check on him.”

Charlotte nodded.

As Susy was pulled away by a relative, Charlotte’s brow furrowed, her gaze falling to the floor.

Evander was never late…

A knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. She turned to Loretta and asked for her phone.
