“Caleb, you are my smartest child. The one I trust the most, the one who understands me best,” Mr. Rayburn said, clasping his hands behind his back as he walked to the side. “If you had listened to me back then and married the Answorth family’s daughter, your son would have been my chosen heir by now, not Wesley.”
Nannie glanced at Caleb.
Caleb took a deep breath. “If I had married the Answorth girl as you wished, you would have been satisfied, but would I still be the man I am today? Father, sometimes I truly envy my brothers. At least they had the freedom to choose, a freedom I never had. You valued me, but that weight of expectation was also a cage.”
Mr. Rayburn frowned. “Are you going to defy me today for their sake?”
“If you refuse to leave them alone, then I’ll have no choice but to try.”
The atmosphere in the living room grew frighteningly oppressive. Even the bodyguards outside didn’t dare make a sound. Behind Caleb, Cannon had already understood the situation; he knew this old man was the grandfather he had never met.
Suddenly, he stepped forward, standing protectively in front of his father like a responsible young man. “Sir, please don’t give my father a hard time!”
He didn't call him grandfather.
He knew that if the man hadn’t come to see him in all these years, it meant he didn’t care about him.
Mr. Rayburn watched the scene, his eyes flickering with a complex emotion.
“Cannon, be a good boy and go back to your room.” Caleb didn’t want him involved. Just as he was about to usher him and Nannie away, Cannon spoke up. “I’m an adult. I’m turning eighteen this year. Dad, I’m a man now. I can take responsibility!”
Caleb froze.
He suddenly realized his son was already half a head taller than him. He was no longer the little boy who needed his protection.
“Enough.” Mr. Rayburn closed his eyes for a long moment before finally speaking again. When he opened them, he said, “I came here intending to make them break things off with you, not to commit a crime. I just wanted to see what kind of woman and child you would hide away and protect so fiercely for over a decade.”
