Edgar Lockwood turned a cold face to Grace Lockwood. "Grace, when you married into the Lockwood family, what did I tell you on our wedding night?"
Grace Lockwood said, "You told me to listen to you for the rest of my life."
"And are you listening to me now?"
Grace's face turned grim. Edgar continued, "The day after you married me, what did my parents tell you? That you were now the matriarch of the Lockwood family, and your duty was to uphold the family's honor. Now, you're willing to tarnish the Lockwood name just because of your personal preference. You want to plan a wedding for them? Is a divorced woman even worthy?"
Grace's face turned visibly pale.
Mrs. Lockwood stepped forward angrily. "Don't you dare try to manipulate my mother-in-law. You know exactly what you've done. What right do you have to speak to her like that?"
Grace said furiously, "You can't talk like that! He's your father-in-law. You must respect him! You're our daughter-in-law. How can you be so disrespectful?"
Mrs. Lockwood was stunned. Her mother-in-law had never spoken to her like this before, never so harshly.
"Mom, what's wrong with you?"
Mrs. Lockwood looked at Grace in disbelief.
Grace said, "Your father-in-law is right. I have failed in my duty. As the matriarch, I must uphold the family's honor. The Lockwood family will not be hosting their wedding."
"Mom, how can you do this? Since they've decided to be together, we, as their elders, should be preparing a wedding for them."
"Are you refusing to listen to me now?"
Grace's tone was fierce, and Mrs. Lockwood didn't know what to say.
Grace let out a sigh.
"Forget it. They've left. It's good that they've left. The burden of the Lockwood name is far too heavy."
