As Natalie listened to the voices coming from the listening device, her heart went cold.
She had never imagined her life story was a lie. She really was a child of the Ward family, swapped at birth by her mother, Kate Verdan.
Because Kate was afraid her own child would suffer, and because she knew what kind of man Martin Doyle was, she had switched them, destroying Natalie's life in the process.
She never thought that the mother she respected and loved most was the architect of her ruin.
So what was all that affection she’d been shown? Was it just guilt for stealing her life?
Natalie felt as if her heart was being ripped to shreds. Losing Darren and Hanley to Marie had been the worst thing she could imagine.
But she was wrong. There was something worse. What had been stolen from her was her entire life.
Everything she was supposed to have had been taken. She had nothing left.
Natalie felt her legs start to give way, but Terence’s hand held her steady.
“The people in this world who don’t care about you, you don’t have to care about them either. No matter what happens, I will always be by your side.”
Natalie fought back her tears. She didn’t want to keep being so vulnerable in front of Terence.
“Thank you,” she said. “Thank you for planting the bug, and thank you for letting me hear the truth.”
At the hospital, Natalie had deliberately mentioned that Marie might have pushed Martin.
She knew that if Marie was their daughter, Kate Verdan would never allow her own child to harm her own father.
