Kate Verdan sighed and said, "So you still blame me. You blame me for not giving you a better start in life, is that it? Because I couldn't marry a rich man, you had to suffer, right?"
Kate Verdan questioned Fiona with a fierce look, and Fiona shrank back in fear.
Natalie quickly stepped in front of Fiona. "Mom, Fiona didn't mean that. Don't blame her."
"Natalie, Mom knows I've wronged you, but you really are not the Ward's daughter. Please believe me, you're not their daughter."
Natalie nodded, trying to calm the agitated Kate Verdan. "Mom, I understand. I'm not the Ward's daughter. I'm your daughter."
Hearing Natalie's words, Kate Verdan's frantic emotions finally began to settle.
Kate Verdan took Natalie's hand. "Natalie, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I couldn't give you a better start in life. I'm so sorry."
Natalie replied, "Mom, it's alright. You don't need to blame yourself."
Elaine Ward watched the farce unfold. "Old Mrs. Lockwood. You all heard her. Natalie is not our daughter, and the Ward family would never want a daughter like this!"
"Old Mrs. Lockwood, if there's anything else you're unclear about, you can ask that woman yourself how she conceived that bastard Natalie. It has nothing to do with the Ward family. We're leaving."
After speaking, Richard left with Marie and Elaine Ward.
As she walked away, Marie glanced back at Natalie, her eyes filled with triumph.
That had been a close call. To think Natalie was actually a bastard... it was like fate itself was helping her!
Kate Verdan then looked at Natalie. "Natalie, I'm sorry. You must have thought you were the great heiress of the Ward family. I'm sorry for getting your hopes up. I'm sorry, but you're not Ms. Ward. You're my child with a scumbag. I know the disappointment is immense, and I'm so sorry for that. But you have to believe me. You are my daughter, not the Ward's heiress. You're really not!"
Natalie looked at the grief-stricken Kate Verdan. Was she this upset and guilty because she couldn't provide a privileged life for her?
"Mom, I never wanted to be some Ms. Ward. And you don't have to apologize to me. As long as you're telling the truth, you have nothing to be sorry for."
Kate Verdan's heart jolted, and her gaze faltered as she looked at Natalie.
Natalie sensed something was wrong. A terrible feeling washed over her.
"Mom, look at me. Tell me you wouldn't lie for Marie's sake. Tell me you wouldn't invent a story about my past and hurt me just to protect her life of luxury. You wouldn't do that, right?"
