Richard's brow furrowed. He said sternly, "This is indeed the hospital where you were born. But was Natalie also born there at that time?"
Elaine couldn't be sure. After all, it had been so long.
Marie said frantically, "Dad, Mom, their plan is meticulous. They found my birth hospital. As long as that information is correct, you'll start to have doubts, and everyone will believe her.
"Natalie is terrifying. The fake DNA test claiming I wasn't your daughter was just one step. If you hadn't chosen to believe in me, you would now naturally start to think that Natalie is your real daughter. Then she'd take my place as Ms. Ward and completely replace me. I can hardly breathe just thinking about it. It's so stressful and frightening."
"How dare Natalie do this? How disgusting of her, trying to push you out and steal your place. She's doing this to get revenge on you for taking Darren Cross. Does she really think she can do whatever she wants?"
"That so-called 'publicly supervised DNA test' is just talk. They can make the results whatever they want. I'm not falling for their tricks. Natalie is that monster's biological daughter."
Victoria quickly chimed in, "That's right! Marie is your daughter. How could that country bumpkin Natalie be Ms. Ward? Is she even worthy? It's outrageous that she'd pull a stunt like this.
"You can't be fooled. This is just a smokescreen. If it's repeated enough, it'll subtly influence you until you start to think Marie isn't your real daughter. She's so vicious."
Elaine was even more furious. "Is she treating me like an idiot? My own daughter, and I wouldn't know the difference? She's just some hick trying to climb the social ladder? In her dreams! Richard, you have to help Marie. You can't let Natalie keep bullying her."
Richard said gravely, "Don't worry. I'm moving up the date of the banquet. I'll announce to everyone, ahead of schedule, that you are the new heir to the Ward Group. Natalie has nothing to do with us."
"Terence, this woman has a scandalous history, and now she's being blamed for driving her own adoptive father to his death. Are you really willing to risk universal condemnation to be with her?"
Edgar Lockwood pointed at Natalie, seething with anger. The news of Martin Doyle's suicide and Natalie's alleged role in it had already caused the Lockwood Group's stock to fall. Terence's indifferent attitude only fueled Edgar's fury.
Natalie knew she couldn't blame Edgar. She really had brought trouble to the Lockwood family again.
But Terence grabbed Natalie's hand, his gaze firm. "The fact that people are slinging mud at Natalie is my failure to protect her. I'm just grateful she's willing to be with me, and I will stand by her no matter what."
