“I… I’m going to be late for work. I have to go.”
With that, Natalie fled in a panic. She couldn't stay a moment longer, or she’d die of embarrassment.
Mrs. Lockwood watched her run off. Why was she leaving just like that?
Mrs. Lockwood called after her.
“Natalie, you haven’t eaten breakfast!”
She had only stopped Natalie to make sure she ate.
After all, Natalie had skipped dinner last night and was now planning to go to work without breakfast. How could she manage?
But somehow the topic had gotten sidetracked, and Natalie had bolted.
“In the end, she still didn’t eat. I should have just packed her a sandwich and some milk.”
Mrs. Lockwood was muttering to herself and didn’t notice her son, Terence, right behind her.
Terence watched Natalie’s panicked escape, a small smile playing on his lips.
Running that fast? Was she that scared?
When Mrs. Lockwood turned around and saw Terence behind her, she jumped.
“Terence, when did you get here? You scared me to death.”
“Just as you were worrying about your daughter-in-law skipping breakfast.”
Terence’s words made Mrs. Lockwood’s eyes sparkle.
“Daughter-in-law? It seems you two are moving along quickly. Son, you’re not very considerate. How could you not tell me about something this big?”
Terence didn’t respond. Mrs. Lockwood moved closer, a wide grin on her face. “Last night with Natalie… was it for real?”
Did all the Lockwoods have a habit of sneaking up on people?
“What do you mean by that?”
Edgar Lockwood’s face was grim. “I heard the others talking today. Something happened between Terence and Natalie last night, is that right? As his mother, how could you let Terence get involved with a woman like that? I’ve looked into her. She’s divorced and has a child. Even if the Lockwood family were on the brink of ruin, our descendants would never marry a woman like that.”
“Sir, it’s very kind of you to worry so much about your descendants at your age. But my son is very sensible, you don’t need to worry about him. You should focus your concern on Simon and the others. I believe Simon mentioned he has many siblings. You should worry about them instead.”
Edgar Lockwood said angrily, “How dare you speak to me like that? The audacity! I’m telling you, no descendant of the Lockwood family is allowed to marry a divorced woman.”
Mrs. Lockwood’s smile became strained.
He thought her attitude was bad? She was already being as polite as she could.
What more did he want? People shouldn't be so difficult.
Mrs. Lockwood smiled and said, “Natalie has many wonderful qualities. You can’t just label her because she’s been divorced. I have something to attend to, so I’ll be going now.”
