“That was probably your father’s way of warning us,” Mrs. Lockwood said. “Let’s go, quickly.”
“But Grandma, we haven’t heard anything yet.”
Lucas pressed his ear to the door like an overeager puppy. Mrs. Lockwood had to pull him away.
“You’re just a kid. What do you expect to hear? Let’s go, let’s go.”
Mrs. Lockwood hurried the two children away, afraid her son would open the door and catch them in the act. That would be beyond awkward.
More importantly, it would get in the way.
Inside, Terence heard the commotion outside die down. He knew they were gone, and the tension in his brow finally eased.
When he had smashed the bottle, he had covered Natalie’s ears with his hands, so she wasn’t startled, but she had still heard the noise.
“What was that sound? Did something break? Did I do it?”
Drunk, Natalie assumed she had accidentally broken something in the room.
Although she was staying here for now, the room belonged to the Lockwood family, and everything in it was expensive. The thought that she might have broken something while drunk made her feel terrible.
Like a frightened bird, she shot up from his lap.
Terence hadn't expected her to stand so suddenly and was afraid she would step on the broken glass.
“Be careful!”
Fearing she would get hurt, Terence lunged forward and tackled her onto the bed.
The sudden motion left Natalie even dizzier.
“Terence, I think I’m drunk. I saw you stand up.”
Hearing her words, Terence’s heart leaped into his throat.
He had moved quickly to protect her, pushing her onto the bed.
Natalie frowned, her heart filled with self-blame.
Her hands moved further up his leg, and her words made Terence afraid he would be exposed.
“It’s dark now. I should go. We can do this tomorrow.”
At that moment, a low rumble of thunder sounded, followed by a flash of lightning that split the sky.
Natalie suddenly grabbed his hand. “Don’t go. I’m scared of the dark.”
She was someone so afraid of the dark that she slept with a nightlight, yet she had insisted on keeping the lights off earlier, likely afraid he would see her in her distressed state.
And now, a thunderstorm was rolling in.
“I won’t go. I’ll stay with you.”
Natalie nodded. Terence watched her, relieved that she hadn't discovered his secret.
